Comfortable lodging with pool in quite jungle

      4 of 5
A number of points first: 1. The rental units are listed as two bedrooms, no baths- There are actually five units available for rent, only one unit is two bedroom, the others are one bedroom with a living room couch that can be made to sleep two additional people. Each unit has a large “bath”room with sink, toilet ,and beautiful ,large tiled shower. The kitchen is open with the living room and is large with full size frig and stove with plenty of storage and counter space. 2. The location of the rental units as shown on the map is not correct. The rentals are actually about 5 km from the town of Puerto Viejo: 1km at the end of a side gravel road, then 2km along a main gravel road, then 2km on the main paved road into town. 3. The rentals are listed locally as VIP Hotel at Playa Negro, and signs VIP Hotel point the way along the gravel roads. My wife and I had a wonderful time staying in a one bedroom unit for a month from early January to early February at a rate of about $50 per night. The location is in the jungle, and Howler monkeys could be heard every morning before sun up. One morning they were especially close and a group could be seen jumping from tree to tree for about an hour a couple of hours after sun up. The property is planted with beautiful foliage and flowering plants. Each unit has a large terrace with hammock and rocking chair which is great for relaxing and having a drink. The swimming pool is a great place to cool off at the end of the day. The owner, Mariam, who lives in one of the units and the house keeper, Minerva, and her husband, Diego, the grounds and pool keeper ,who live in a small house next to the units, made us welcome like part of their family. We had a rental car and would usually go to the beach each afternoon. There are different types of beaches in the area, some with gentle waves for swimming, some for expert surfers. We only ate in restaurants twice during our stay, preferring to cook our meals “at home”.
