Beautiful Home in Belgian Countryside Near Brussels

5 of 5
My family of four (two adults and two teenagers) stayed at Aan Den Oever for four nights in July 2016. The home is beautiful and we really enjoyed our stay. We would definitely come back. For starters, the pictures are representative of the home. It is bright and modern with rooms spread over three levels. The ground floor has a nice living room, a well-equipped kitchen and a laundry room and bathroom. There is a nice outdoor patio just outside the kitchen along with a small backyard looking on to greenspace. Stairs (which are typical European stairs—steeps and narrow!) lead up to two bedrooms and a bathroom on the next level, and there is another bedroom (and large outdoor balcony) one more level up. The apartment was immaculately clean when we arrived, and it is decorated beautifully. Lots of attention to detail. We really enjoyed the location in a small village outside of Leuven. You will need a car, although there is a bus stop at the end of the small lane leading to the home. There is a lot of greenspace behind and near the home, complete with walking paths and a small river where canoeing is possible. Even though you are in the countryside, you are close to lots of sights. Leuven is only 10-15 minutes away, and Brussels is only 30 minutes away. Our hosts, Barbara and Steven, were great. They live next door, but are careful to give you your privacy. The washing machine was not working when we arrived, but they had it fixed within two days. In the meantime, Barbara volunteered to wash our clothes for us (which she did). They also provided a number of suggestions, and took the time (unexpectedly) to research a park in Leuven where I could play basketball with my son. Our only challenge during our stay were the mosquitos. We visited during mid-summer, and because the home does not have air-conditioning, the windows needed to be open to keep temperatures reasonable. Like many places in this part of Europe, there are no screens on the windows (there are screens on the sliding doors on the ground floor and top floor). As a result, we had to deal with mosquitos at the end of each day. Other than that, we don’t have a single complaint or issue, and we highly recommend it to others.

There were five of us on a fishing holiday and although the sport was quite poor we were all very pleased with the house and it's location. This would be a fantastic base for a cycling holiday. I can recommend a day in Leuven, a lovely city.
