This lovely apartment is in a great location for levada walks and excursions to Jardim do Mar, Calheta and Porto Moniz. It is comfortable, well-equipped, and quiet and it is centrally located. The bed is comfortable with lovely linens, the kitchen is modern and well equipped, and there was a brand new washer/dryer. Our hosts, Johnny and Connie, were always available to answer any questions we had, and they gave us many suggestions for events and activities happening in the area. We were able to attend Christmas concerts and local markets with their help. Our hosts welcomed us on arrival (very late at night) with homemade soup and traditional bread, and some Madeira wine. They run an excellent restaurant, which we enjoyed, and there is a grocery store nearby. We had a perfect stay in this lovely place. And the sunsets were amazing! We will recommend it to our friends! Thank you Johnny and Connie — you were very good to us!
My wife and I had a very enjoyable week here. Met by Jorge's wife at the local cafe, we were taken to the apartment and shown the facilities. A complimentary bottle of wine, Madeira cake, fruit and chocolate were all provided, thank you.
Calheta is fairly quiet although a few residents keep chickens (and cockerels), and dogs which bark at random times. Didn't bother us too much when we got used go it. There is a good restaurant (Convento das Vinhas), within 10 mins walk down a steep hill, but our favourite was New Era in the marina, 5 min drive away.
We can recommend the open top bus tours of Funchal, 40 mins drive away, park in the CR7 car park near the ferry terminal, easy parking and cheap.
A car is essential for this location unless you want to stay in Calheta and use taxis for short trips - the beach isn't really within walking distance. That said, driving is not for the faint hearted, minor roads are narrow and steep with many hairpin bends and 'spirited' local drivers!
Hope this helps.
