The property manager was very helpful.
The vacation rental was very clean.
I was very happy with the location.
I was very dissatisfied with the condition of the vacation rental.
Overall, I recommend this vacation rental.
This nice cottage has a great location, nice view of the ocean, and a good kitchen. The gate lock was broken making the property less secure. The master bed was rock hard (not just firm). The foldout bed in the upstairs loft was ripped, old, lumpy, and hard. The cushions in the living room had mold spots on them (which had been tuned over to hide them) and need replacing. The PS3 was broken, the Roku was broken, and the TV was very difficult to operate. I'm glad the WiFi worked and we brought devices for the kids, because the cottage entertainment was useless. The air conditioning units were old and had no thermostats. They was a manual on and off button on each of the high up units. While we were there a construction company brought dump truck loads of rock to the property (maybe building a new privacy wall). The trucks were loud and came through many times a day. One day coming twice during my daughters nap time. Overall a nice place to stay, but needs some love and attention to make it worth the price tag.
This property was actually our "second choice" after the first property we booked was inaccessible due to spring flooding on the north shore - it actually turned out to be a serendipitous blessing because we just loved the town of Kapaa, the central location for exploring the island and Tom & Linda's lovely home. They truly thought of everything to make our stay comfortable - from everything you needed for the beach to a well-equipped kitchen for meals to high-speed WiFi for all of our devices (three teenagers... need I say more?). The home is located just a few steps away from a beachfront walking/biking path in the rear and lots of shopping/food options in Kapaa just steps away from the front door (check out Wailua shaved ice!). We felt absolutely safe letting our kids explore the area by themselves and found everyone we met to be friendly.
The island of Kauai was our favorite and we explored as much as we could - this home was centrally located near the one main road on the island so you could be to just about anywhere in an hour or so. Waimea Canyon is a must see (drive to the very end of the road for the best views!) - if you can go by boat or helicopter, it is pricey but so worth it! We chose NaPali Experience (boat tour of Napali coastline) and Island Helicopters and couldn't choose a favorite experience of the two - both were awesome! Hiking is free and our favorite trails were Sleeping Giant (Nounou East), the Pools of Mokolea and Makaleha Falls (this one is hard but really fun). Be prepared for lots of mud when you hike in Kauai and good footwear is a must.
Not sure when we might make it back to Kauai but, when the day comes, Tom & Linda's property will now certainly be our first choice!
