I've been coming Way Downeast for nearly twenty years. I've stayed at this property twice, and it is by far my favorite. I can't imagine staying anywhere else at this point. My goal when taking these trips is to escape the manic pace of my professional life and rejuvenate. The privacy and location of the property and thoughtfully appointed home help to achieve those goals. The owner, Stacey, is quick to respond to questions, and the local caretaker, Ron, is thoughtful and kind, if you have the opportunity to talk with him. It is the type of place that you can easily slip into and feel at home. Lubec is a small town, though it offers basic amenities. Nearby (within 40 minutes) the towns of Eastport, Calais and Machias offer plenty of resources. The beauty of this location is that you can take advantage of quiet moments in nature while in the home or on one of the Washington County lakes and trails. If you're a hiker, I suggest the Bold Coast Trail in Cutler and the Nature Conservancy's trails on Great Wass Island in Beals. There are too many lakes to name. Regardless, you can have endless time enjoying the wildness of Maine but then go into town, typically a small one, and meet friendly folks. If you're looking for a heavily trafficked area with lots of tourist shops, this is not the place for you. Drive back down to Bar Harbor and Acadia to start and then keep going south. But if you want to experience the outdoors, local produce and seafood, and terrific people in a beautiful setting, then I cannot make a higher recommendation than the Seaside Sanctuary.
