We stayed for only one night, but had the privilege of getting to know the wonderful Fowler family. Billy and Ashley and their many children greeted us with open arms, shared their story of their commitment to farming, family and their religious community and made us feel like old friends. Staying on their farm, even for a short time, was an uplifting experience and a welcome break from our hectic daily lives. We got a chance to learn about their farm and had fun milking the cow and the goat.
The house is very comfortable, well decorated and perfectly appointed for guests. After our visit with the Fowlers, we went to Waco for dinner, then came back and sat by our fire pit with Shep, the farm dog, under the bright stars on a perfect spring Texas night. The ducks in the coop next to the house came out to greet us and we got to visit the goats in the pen on the other side of the back yard.
The next morning, we followed Billy and Ashley's advice and had breakfast at the cafe at the Homestead Heritage, which is just down the road. It's a fascinating place with very friendly folks who are happy to explain what they do. We had limited time, but enjoyed visiting the potter, blacksmith and woodworking shops and talking with the craftsmen there about their crafts.
I'd recommend this property to anyone seeking an escape from the city, and I'd encourage you to take the time to look around the property and visit with the Fowlers. It will be a memorable experience.
