When we were planning our first trip to the Big Island, I knew very little about the variety of climate zones on the island and what the implications of a choice of locations would be. All I knew was that the volcano was spewing lava, and there were earthquakes on a regular basis. I did not fear an 'end of the world' scenario, but I did realize that it paid to do one's homework regarding normal wind patterns and the VOG .
With that in mind, we looked at several properties all over Hawaii and found two in the neighborhood of Waimea which looked promising. We wanted something far away enough from the resorts as to be quiet, close enough to good beaches and travel routes, and yet out of the path of any of the VOG that we had been hearing about. We ultimately picked this property and we couldn't have been more pleased. The accommodation was absolutely top notch, the location was perfect (we never once experienced any negative effects of the VOG or earthquakes) , and Matt was generous and helpful to a fault (leaving us surprise gifts of fresh home grown bananas throughout our stay) and giving great suggestions for things to do while visiting.
The property was exceptionally clean and well supplied with all the necessities we could possibly need for our one week stay. It was quiet, it had a wonderful library (which we ended up never using), it had a fantastically complete kitchen up to and including a coffee machine, bean grinder and just enough coffee beans to get you started for the first 2-3 days of your stay (NICE touch). The bed was insanely comfortable and the outdoor shower, well, what can i say? If I could have one of these at my place at home, I would. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to get used to showering indoors again.
The outside was landscaped like an oasis with mature fruit trees all around. It made for a lush and very private setting, especially open and relaxing and a place to look forward to after a day out exploring.
Waimea is just a couple miles up the road and it is chockful of excellent restaurants and a couple grocery stores. It is a low key but very comfortable town, proud of it's ranching history and fun to explore during the weekends when farmers markets are in full swing.
Vacations are a mix of good planning and serendipity. We look back on our week at Matt and Rose's place as a most fortunate mix of both. Thank you Matt! We cannot wait for our return visit
