  • Great location if you love the mountains.
    5 of 5

Authentic and well renovated farm house with all essential amenities, including dishwasher with is appreciated when you are nine people in the house (it fits 11). Access to the house requires some careful driving up the mountain (about 15 minutes), but you are rewarded by the most spectacular view. We did some day trips to Lucca, Pisa and Cinque Terre, as well as shorter trips to Grotto del Vente and Ponte delle Maddalena. Just as much time was spent at the very nice pool which is a lifesaver during the height of summer. This house and location is highly recommended if you value privacy, quiet surroundings and great views, and don't mind the drive up and down the mountain.

  • A Blissful Retreat high above Lucca
    5 of 5

I can't say enough about how much our group of 5 (3 adults, 2 teens) enjoyed our week at Casa Volpe. We had been in Italy a week and were hot and tired. Casa Volpe was a cool oasis where we could relax and take in the stunning scenery, and go at a slower pace. Mark is the most welcoming, generous, remarkable host -- he and his lovely dog Betty met us and guided us up the steep road to the house. He then came back half an hour later to take us to the nearest supermarket, to be sure we didn't get lost. He was full of local lore and recommendations, and brought us a bottle of his own olive oil which was delicious! The house itself is cool, comfortable, with all bathrooms and bedrooms modern and in great condition. It's only a 15-20 minute drive to Lucca, where we took in restaurants, shopping, and wandering this lovely medieval city. We also drove up to Bagni to Lucca one day in search of a swimming pool to cool off -- the one there was closed but a friendly local directed to one in another nearby village. The whole area is gorgeous, a feast for the eyes and the stomach with fantastic produce and wine as well. I highly recommend Mark's villa for a relaxing retreat from the tourists and crowds, and feeling like you are experiencing the best Tuscany can offer.
