On December 31, many eyes are on the glittery ball in Times Square. But with all due respect to New York, it’s not the only place rocking in the New Year. These destinations offer their own local twist on first night festivities, ranging from fireworks to beach parties and parades. So whether you’re looking to bundle up or break out the bikini, remember to brush up on the lyrics to “Auld Lang Syne.”

Fireworks over Niagara Falls

All things New Year’s in Niagara Falls

Deck the falls! Niagara Falls is stunning any time of the year, but they become even more magical on New Year’s Eve when they’re lit up by fireworks. Festivities kick off in Queen Victoria Park with live bands as well as plenty of food and drink to keep you fueled for a late night. Luckily for revelers, there are not one but two fireworks displays. Don’t miss the Winter Festival of Lights where more than two million sparkling bulbs light up the city.

Join the bash in Boston

Boston offers one of the biggest New Year’s Eve bashes on the East Coast. Bundle up and head outdoors for First Night festivities. Added bonus—it’s all free! Ooh and ahh over the fireworks display in Boston Harbor, or stake out a spot to watch the Celebrate Boston parade. There are also ice sculptures and live music. If you still have steam, celebrations continue on January 1.

Say “Hello, 2017” in Savannah

We’ll toast to this: The grand symbol of Savannah’s first night is a six-foot-tall to-go cup that is raised as midnight approaches. The “Up the Cup” party happens down on River Street with fireworks, live music, and a light show. Brave souls can shake the cobwebs away on January 1 by joining the Tybee Polar Plunge on nearby Tybee Island.

Break away for a beachy Bahamas New Year

If you’d rather party in shorts than a down jacket, head to the Bahamas. Beach celebrations and fireworks mark the end of the year, but the real party happens on January 1 with multiple Junkanoo parades. Think of it as a Caribbean Mardi Gras, where the streets are filled with music, costumed performers, dancing, and plenty of good cheer.

A musical New Year’s Eve in Memphis

It’s no wonder that America’s Music City offers one of the most rocking New Year’s Eve bashes. The biggest bash takes place on Beale Street. Work your way down the street’s famous clubs and bars while enjoying live outdoor music and fireworks. Instead of a ball dropping, Memphis will ring in 2017 with a dramatic guitar drop. If you’d rather party indoors, head to one of the city’s famed music clubs for dinner and all-night music.

Pick your party in San Diego

Longing for a balmy, beautiful New Year’s Eve? San Diego is your spot. Take your pick from beach parties to moonlit yacht cruises to ring in the New Year. Or if you’d rather boogie your way into 2017, pack your dancing shoes and head to one of the trendy clubs in the Gaslamp Quarter, or join one of the pub crawls and club crawls throughout the city. Keep the celebration going with a New Year’s Day brunch cruise. BYOD (Bring your own Dramamine).
