What is HomeAway, Inc.?

HomeAway based in Austin, Texas, is the world's leading online marketplace for the vacation rental industry, with sites representing over 1.2 paid listings of vacation rental homes in 193 countries. HomeAway® offers an extensive selection of vacation rental homes that provide travelers with memorable experiences and benefits, especially more room to relax, for less than the cost of traditional hotel accommodations. The company also makes it easy for vacation rental owners and property managers to advertise their properties and manage bookings online. 

How was HomeAway founded?

Over the years, HomeAway CEO Brian Sharples and his family rented a variety of ski and beach homes, enjoying the space, availability of a kitchen and flexibility to invite others on vacation. However, he found that finding and booking a property online in the highly fragmented vacation rental industry was not as easy as reserving a hotel.  It was out of this frustration, that he realized the opportunity to transform the vacation rental industry and build the world's leading marketplace for online vacation rentals. Sharples and Carl Shepherd founded HomeAway, Inc. in February 2005.

HomeAway has nearly 2,000 employees in 20 different offices worldwide. In 2014, total revenue increased 28.9% to $446.8 million from $346.5 million in 2013.

According to the HomeAway® Vacation Rental Report: Owner Edition, more than half (54%) of owners generate enough rental income to cover at least three quarters of their mortgage payment. And according to HomeAway's 2013 Customer Satisfaction Survey, second home owners rent their properties to travelers 18 weeks a year at an average weekly rental rate of $1,500 and earn more than $28,000 in annual rental income.
