VRBO selects inspirational vacation homeowner for 2019 Citrus Bowl coin toss

Homeowner who helped house families displaced by Hurricane Michael to participate in official game-day ceremony

AUSTIN, Texas, December 21, 2018 – VRBO® — the site travelers use to book beach houses, cabins and condos — today announced that Molly Caplenor, a vacation homeowner from Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, will perform the coin toss at the 2019 VRBO Citrus Bowl on January 1 in Orlando. To set the stage for the 73rd edition of the bowl game, Caplenor will flip the coin at Camping World Stadium before a national audience watching the Kentucky Wildcats play the Penn State Nittany Lions on ABC.

VRBO is recognizing Caplenor, who lives in the Old Florida Village neighborhood, for her generous efforts that helped house more than 25 families from the Florida Panhandle who lost their homes during Hurricane Michael in October.

After the storm passed, Caplenor not only offered her own vacation home as rent-free housing, but also rallied others in the community to open their homes to displaced families. Thanks to Old Florida Village’s relief efforts, families in need were welcomed by fully stocked kitchens, comfortable furniture and plenty of space to recuperate and recapture a sense of normalcy.

“VRBO is dedicated to bringing people together. Our company was incredibly moved when we learned how Molly and Old Florida Village mobilized to help others in their greatest time of need,” said Judy Kay, senior vice president of VRBO, strategy. “We are honored and humbled to have Molly represent VRBO in her home state of Florida at this year’s Citrus Bowl.”

In addition to housing displaced families, Old Florida Village also collected donations for food, toiletries and other daily necessities. The welcoming neighborhood also hosted Sunday suppers to greet their new neighbors and provide a sense of community.

To continue relief efforts, Caplenor has begun project THRIVE, an initiative that allows spring and summer renters to help with recovery efforts through shopping, exercise and volunteerism during their stay.
