Spaniards Reveal Their Country’s Family-Friendliest Destinations

AUSTIN, Texas – According to the UN World Tourism Organization, Spain is set to replace the US as the second most popular destination in the world after France[i], and HomeAway® data shows a more than 150 percent jump in vacation home bookings year over year in the top five destinations in Spain[ii]. Now new research from HomeAway zeroes in on Spain’s most family-friendly destinations. The findings, culled from surveys, focus groups and voting among thousands of families, come from those who know best: Spaniards themselves.

Topping the list of family-friendly destinations are Conil de la Frontera, a seaside town in southern Spain with sandy beaches; San Sebastián, located on the Bay of Biscay and well-known for its restaurants; and Jarandilla de la Vera, a picturesque town just a short drive west from Madrid.

“Barcelona, Madrid and Seville are all beloved stops on Americans’ trip to Spain. Now families who’ve spent years exploring their country are letting us in on some of their favorite getaways off the beaten path,” said Melanie Fish, family travel expert at HomeAway. “Surfing in Conil de la Frontera and pintxos-eating in San Sebastian should now make the list for adventurous American families.”

The top destinations fall into three general categories: coastal, urban and rural destinations. The highest vote-getters are as follows:

Coastal Destinations:

  1. Conil de la Frontera (Cádiz)
  2. Isla Cristina (Huelva)
  3. Jávea (Alicante)
  4. Cambrils (Tarragona)
  5. Torremolinos (Málaga)
  6. Cabo de Palos (Murcia)

Urban Destinations:

  1. San Sebastián
  2. Granada
  3. Barcelona
  4. Madrid
  5. Valencia
  6. Salamanca

Rural Destinations:

  1. Jarandilla de la Vera (Cáceres)
  2. Potes (Cantabria)
  3. Besalú (Girona)
  4. Olite (Navarra)
  5. Jaca (Huesca)
  6. Navaluenga (Ávila)

About the Study

Sondea, a third-party research company, conducted focus groups with parents of children (aged up to 15 years old) that rent vacation homes, asking what criteria makes a vacation destination family-friendly. A survey with more than 1,000 respondents narrowed the top criteria to seven. The nominees for the 18 most family-friendly destinations in Spain were selected by HomeAway travelers in a Facebook survey. A landing page was created for more than 3,000 families to vote on the final winners in three categories.
