Travel trend: Family vacation rental bookings for the holidays are up 45 percent

AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 9, 2018 - More and more families are choosing to rent a home for the holidays and connect with what really matters: the people they love. HomeAway® — the site travelers use to book beach houses, cabins and condos — analyzed its booking data and found a nearly 45-percent increase in year-over-year demand[1] for those traveling with children and booking vacation homes over the winter holidays.

With the overall popularity of vacation homes skyrocketing, people are realizing that renting a HomeAway property provides the amenities for their group to feel at home. Filters help travelers find their perfect vacation rental match, such as a fireplace to ensure Santa stops by and a full kitchen to cook the holiday feast.

“Having room to be together, space to spread out and a kitchen to cook in is a winning combination whether it’s in a vacation destination or down the street from Grandma’s house,” said Melanie Fish, HomeAway’s travel expert. “Renting a home has made people realize they can travel for the holidays but still be together instead of splitting up into sterile hotel rooms.”

Many Americans dreaming of snow this holiday season are renting vacation homes in the mountains of Colorado, Utah and California. According to HomeAway, these are the top destinations for those seeking a white Christmas.

The most popular snowy Christmas destinations are[2]:

  1. Breckenridge, Colo.
  2. Park City, Utah
  3. Mammoth Lakes, Calif.
  4. South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
  5. Truckee, Calif.
  6. Big Bear Lake, Calif.
  7. Keystone, Colo.
  8. Steamboat Springs, Colo.
  9. Winter Park, Colo.
  10. Sunriver, Ore.
