HomeAway Data Reveals It's Back to the Beach for

Memorial Day Weekend Vacationers

AUSTIN, Texas, May 25, 2017 – With AAA projecting that nearly 40 million Americans – the most since 2005 –  will travel at least 50 miles from home this weekend HomeAway® queried its database to uncover where exactly vacation-home-destined guests are heading.

In a landslide (or perhaps “sandslide”), the world leader in vacation rentals found it’s “surf's up,” with beach towns taking nine of the top ten spots, and 16 of the top 25. As to precisely where those sun worshippers will embark, Panama City Beach took the top spot, with four other Floridian beach towns cracking the top ten. Orange Beach, AL, and Hilton Head Island, SC, also made the top ten, with the likes of San Diego, Myrtle Beach and Galveston not far behind as Memorial Day weekend destinations.

“Beaches are always popular destinations for HomeAway travelers, since our vacation rentals are whole homes with room for friends, family and often even pets,” said Melanie Fish, HomeAway’s family travel expert. “Perhaps because airfare to Europe is low, people renting vacation homes are heading overseas, too, for the unofficial start of summer.”

Paris, Rome and London are among the top 25 destinations for American travelers this long weekend.
