    Puerto Real: The Red Cape

The small coastal town of Puerto Real wraps around a picturesque bay of the same name in the heart of Cabo Rojo. When you stay in a Puerto Real vacation rental, you'll discover why it's known for its sports fishing, seafood restaurants and achingly beautiful sunsets. Cabo Rojo was supposedly named by Christopher Columbus on discovering the red-tinted cliffs along the southern cape. No one will blame you for spending your days on the beach, but there's no shortage of water sports to keep you active, including some of the best Caribbean swells further up the coast.

Hit the water on jet skis at Puerto Real

If you've scored a waterfront Puerto Real vacation rental, you can tip-toe down to the beach in moments. While it's tempting to spend your days stretched out on the sand, there's much to do if you get a little restless. You won't have to look hard to find rental outfits offering everything from jet skis to sea kayaks, or the newest craze, paddleboards. Located roughly half way between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic is the tiny Isla de Mona, a haven for scuba divers who often dub it the "Galapagos of the Caribbean".

Puerto Real is a seriously photogenic place

The rocky landscape along the Cabo Rojo coastline is seriously picturesque. If you've brought your camera, you should try to swing by the El Puente Natural, a series of naturally eroded sea cliffs forming archways. While you're in the area, grab a few snaps of Los Morillos, a working lighthouse which still serves as a warning beacon to passing ships. Just a little north of your Puerto Real vacation rental is Mayaguez, the largest city on the west coast of Puerto Rico, which is a hotspot for history buffs and culture vultures.

Skip winter this year in Puerto Real

Looking for a little break from the winter cold? If you get yourself down to a Puerto Real vacation rental between mid-December and March, you'll be treated to long, sunny days with a temperature that nears perfect. You do have other options though. A little later in the spring, when things begin to thaw out back home, the Puerto Real rentals drop their prices before the annual rainy season. If you bag one between April and May, you'll be rewarded with long stretches of beach with far fewer travelers taking up room on the sand.

An 1,800-acre wildlife haven near Puerto Real

Just south of your Puerto Real vacation rental in the southwest of Puerto Rico is the Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge, an 1,800-acre strip of protected land and haven for animals. Amongst the landscape of tropical lagoons and mangrove forests, you'll find enough critters to keep even the most experienced of wildlife enthusiasts satisfied. The habitats are particularly good for birders, who descend with their binoculars to tick off that all-important list. If you dart down the Butterfly Trail, you'll find a staggering number of these colorful insects swooping around the sea grass.
