Columbia vacation rentals

There's gold in them there hills

Pack up your pickaxe and sling on your six-gun, because you're going prospecting for vacation gold. It might be more than 150 years since ragged prospectors with long beards hit the mother lode in this part of California, but it won't feel like ancient history with a Columbia vacation rental. Take a walk down Columbia's beautifully preserved main street and it'll genuinely feel like you've taken a walk back into the 1880s, with Gold Rush-era buildings, stagecoaches rumbling by, and the clanging of the blacksmith's hammer. Kick back with a sarsaparilla and take it all in.

Blend into the crowd with your ten-gallon hat

Most of the action in your Columbia vacation rental is likely to be centered around Columbia State Historic Park, which includes the town center. Essentially a giant living history museum, it's a preserved 19th-century mining town, complete with period-appropriate shops and people in old west costume. Turn up in your spurs, vest, and ten-gallon hat, and nobody will give you a second glance. Apart from the shops, museums and other attractions, there's also a busy program of events including Fourth of July celebrations, wine tasting, big band concerts, ghost tours, and theatrical murder mystery nights.

Where petrol power is a thing of the future

There are no motor vehicles in Columbia town center, but if you're wanting to take the weight off, then why not hop aboard the stagecoach for a town tour? Your only difficulty will be deciding where to get off. Will you turn those dusty boots towards the museum museum, or grab a lamp and head down the old mine? Or how about the town theater? And pint-sized prospectors won't find themselves short of activities either, with diversions including an antique bowling alley, ice cream parlors, and gold panning experiences. You never know, they might just strike it rich.

Keep the brim pulled way down low

A Columbia vacation rental is a golden opportunity at any time of year, but show up between May and October and you're going to need that wide-brimmed Stetson, because summers here can get ferociously hot. It's mostly pretty dry in the high season, but the occasional thunderstorm can come tumbling down from the nearby Sierra Nevada mountains, usually in the afternoons or evenings. Winters, on the other hand, are cooler and a lot wetter. Hopefully the Stetson will double as a rain hat, and you can add an old-time oilskin for added authenticity.

Switch into hiking boots and hit the wildlife trails

Despite Columbia's history, your chances of catching sight of the glint of gold aren't nearly as good as those of spotting wildlife. Columbia is set in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, and if you can bear to pull off the vintage hobnail boots and lace up the hiking boots instead, a trip out of town offers a whole lot of opportunities for spotting wild animals. The grasslands and woods are home to black bear, coyote, bobcat, and deer. And hold up, what's that smell? Oh yeah, there's skunk here too.
