Swaying palms and turquoise sea awaits in Maui

Maui, part of the larger Hawaiian archipelago, is often voted one of the best islands in the US. With a landscape so awe-inspiring – think cascading waterfalls, empty stretches of sandy beach backed by swaying palms and green forest tumbling down the rocky cliffs into the turquoise sea below – you can see why. The dominating volcanic interior of Haleakala National Park provides an outdoor playground for hikers and mountain bikers. But if all that sounds like too much effort, you can lie back in a hammock at your Maui vacation rental and watch the sun setting.

Things to do

Natural wonders aplenty in Maui

The attractions in Hawaii are mostly centered around the spectacular landscape. If you're staying in a Maui vacation rental with the family, you can take them all to Ohe'o Gulch Kipahulu, a series of pools and waterfalls that make for the perfect place to splash around and cool off. Also worth a visit is the Waianapanapa State Park where you can see the eroded sea arches, the blowhole and the black-sand beach. You can complement them by swinging by the Hawaii Nature Center, a not-for-profit which aims to preserve the beautiful Maui scenery.

Reach Maui's summit

Other than the beaches, one of the biggest draws to Maui is the hiking trail that winds its way up to the volcanic crater summit in the Haleakala National Park. If you're not keen on the challenging trek, you can hop on one of the day trips, which transport you up the steepest road in the world to reach it. This is Hawaii, one of the birthplaces of surfing. If you're lucky enough to nab one of the Maui vacation rentals along the coast, you're not going to be far from the ocean swells. Alternatively, rent a windsurf to take advantage of the strong trade winds.

For surf, hit the beaches in winter

The island is a year-round hotspot, but for the best prices on Maui vacation rentals and arguably the most comfortable time weather-wise, try to visit in the shoulder months between April and May or September and November when the skies are wonderfully bright. If you're coming for the surf (and most will be), it's best to nab a rental during the winter months when the conditions are most ideal. If you want the weather to be as hot as possible, summer's the time to go when you can bask in baking sunshine and swim in the calmest waters.

Natural features

See the gentle giants of the seas in Maui

With Maui being surrounded by the warm Pacific Ocean, it will come as no surprise that most of Hawaii's wildlife can be found below the water's surface. A dive or snorkel will reveal everything from solitary reef sharks to Hawaiian green turtles and playful dolphins. If you're lucky and come at the right time, you may even spot the odd humpback whale. That said, if you're a landlubber, there are still some critters to spot. Cheeky little mongoose often scamper across the beach passing noisy monk seals, and if you are up in the mountains, look out for color-changing chameleons.
