Bodega Bay, California is known as the setting for the famous Alfred Hitchcock movie, “The Birds.” The coastline and the buildings in the nearby town of Bodega remain as real-life sets for this classic movie. This scenic fishing village is home to water sports, shopping and dining which can all be enjoyed along this beautiful part of the Pacific shoreline, and wine country beckons with its fields of grapes and wine-tasting tours. You will enjoy your vacation house, cottage or cabin that includes such amenities as Internet access, an outdoor grill and satellite or cable television.
Bodega Bay took center stage in the 1963 Hitchcock movie “The Birds” with many outdoor scenes of bird gatherings highlighting this beautiful, scenic area. The original buildings and a great deal of nostalgic memorabilia are located just two miles inland in the town of Bodega. The famous Potter Schoolhouse where the classroom of children was attacked by birds still stands, and many shops and buildings include a collection of movie memorabilia. The Bodega Country Store has a life-sized statue of Hitchcock and a huge collection of memorabilia for you to enjoy.
Birdwatching will complete the movie theme when you head back to the bay for hiking and bird watching in the many local parks and trails, including Doran Beach Regional Park, the Bird Walk Coastal Access Trail or the Pinnacle Gulch Coastal Access Trail. The northern coast of California is very beautiful, and you will enjoy exploring the ocean beaches.
Bodega Bay features boutiques, family restaurants and art galleries for your shopping and dining pleasure. Seafood is always on the menu, and you can even catch your own dinner with a fishing cruise or by renting fishing tackle in town. With wine country just outside the door, you’ll also enjoy local wines from Sonoma County’s many fine wineries. Most restaurants feature bay views for your relaxation and enjoyment followed by a stroll through the town to visit local art galleries and many small shops.
California's temperate climate is well suited to outdoor sports, and you can enjoy a range of outdoor activities in Bodega Bay. Hiking and biking trails are available throughout the area, and the beaches are excellent for beachcombing or kite flying. Whale watching is at its finest here, with the Bodega Head peninsula offering an elevated, front-row view to the open ocean. Throughout late winter and spring, volunteers staff Bodega Head to help visitors spot whales and to answer questions about whale migration.
Kayaking in the protected bay is a wonderful way to explore the ocean by kayak without being exposed to the rough surf of the open ocean. You can view seals and seabirds and explore the beaches, rocks and native plants all along the bay. Kayak rentals are available in the town of Bodega Bay, or you can choose to hire a kayak guide for a tour of the bay and local rivers.
The weather in Bodega Bay is generally moderate all year long; winters are warm and freezing temperatures are rare. Summers remain warm and comfortable due to the soft ocean breezes that prevent scorching temperatures in the summer. Any time of the year can be a good time to visit with rain gear recommended in the winter for the occasional rain and windstorm.
Bodega Bay is easy to reach by commercial airline and private or rental car. You can choose to take a commercial flight to the Sonoma County Airport or to the San Francisco or Oakland International Airports. Travel from the airport to Bodega Bay is best accomplished by driving, although commercial bus service is also available.
