Alma can be a rather chilly place to visit, and this is because it is the highest incorporated town in the United States, sitting at an elevation of 10,578 feet. It is also located in a valley between three peaks that rise more than 14,000 feet above sea level. When you pack your bags to visit Alma, you may consider packing warm clothes and dressing in layers so that you can be comfortable as you travel to areas that are both higher and lower in elevation. Keep in mind that this area has a low humidity level with a continental climate. It can receive many feet of snow during the winter months, but the summers can be rather dry and pleasant. Many days during the winter have highs that do not rise above the freezing mark, and there are many days during the summer when the temperature may reach into the 70s or higher in some cases.

How to Get There

Because of its high elevation and removed location, the best way to get to Alma is via car. You can drive into the Denver area and rent a car to make it the rest of the way to Alma, or you can drive your own car. When traveling to Alma from Denver, take Highway 285 southwest into Fairplay. In Fairplay, turn north on Highway 9 to travel the remaining distance into Alma.
