If you are searching for the perfect vacation destination on the mountains where you can retreat from the cares of daily life and enjoy a slower pace, look no further than beautiful Alma. Alma is a very small mountain town that is nestled between towering peaks and that is removed from the busy activity of urban life. The best way to experience all that the Alma area has to offer is by staying in a beautiful mountain rental home. These vacation rental homes provide you with many of the amenities that you will not find in a cramped hotel room, and this includes a fully-equipped kitchen, a dedicated parking area, private bedrooms, spacious living areas, decks with mountain views and much more.

    Outdoor Recreation

In an around Alma and the south-central Colorado area, you will find an outdoor enthusiast's paradise. This Rocky Mountain town is situated just south of Hoosier Pass and just north of Fairplay amid the beauty of towering mountain peaks. Here, you will have ample opportunities for hunting, fishing in area lakes and rivers, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and more.

You can rent a vacation home in Cripple Creek, Alma or other nearby areas, and you will love the fact that there is so much to see and do in the area. Alma is a reportedly haunted town, and many people love to tour the area cemetery with the hopes of seeing a ghostly figure that is reported to haunt the area. You can also tour the famous Sweet Home Mine or visit nearby communities of Fairplay, Breckenridge, Leadville and more for shopping and sightseeing in these small mountain towns.

Alma itself does not have a robust nightlife, but there is plenty to see and do in the nearby areas after the sun goes down. For example, in nearby Cripple Creek, you will find a host of casinos, including Bronco Billy's Casino, Wildwood Casino, the Century Casino and others. There are theaters and live shows in Fairplay, Breckenridge and Cripple Creek. Likewise, there are delicious restaurants that serve everything from modern Asian cuisine to mountain barbecue in these and other nearby towns.

Alma can be a rather chilly place to visit, and this is because it is the highest incorporated town in the United States, sitting at an elevation of 10,578 feet. It is also located in a valley between three peaks that rise more than 14,000 feet above sea level. When you pack your bags to visit Alma, you may consider packing warm clothes and dressing in layers so that you can be comfortable as you travel to areas that are both higher and lower in elevation. Keep in mind that this area has a low humidity level with a continental climate. It can receive many feet of snow during the winter months, but the summers can be rather dry and pleasant. Many days during the winter have highs that do not rise above the freezing mark, and there are many days during the summer when the temperature may reach into the 70s or higher in some cases.

    How to Get There

Because of its high elevation and removed location, the best way to get to Alma is via car. You can drive into the Denver area and rent a car to make it the rest of the way to Alma, or you can drive your own car. When traveling to Alma from Denver, take Highway 285 southwest into Fairplay.
