Destination guide

Departamento de Managua is chaotic but charming

The Departamento de Managua covers a wide area of southern Nicaragua, encompassing the capital of the same name, the Pacific Ocean coastline and the shores of Lake Managua, making it the most populated in the country. Let's face it, the capital can be a little chaotic. However, stay a little time and it reveals an achingly charming side, with historical landmarks and fun-loving locals missed by those who skip it. Outside the busy capital, things become decidedly more beautiful. Expect spluttering volcanoes, glistening lakes and huge nature reserves, not to mention the long stretches of golden beach.

Things to do

Layers of history in Departamento de Managua

Nicaraguans are rightfully proud of their revolutionary history and it is reflected in the capital's monuments and museums. During the early 1970s, the center was completely destroyed by an earthquake but has been painstakingly restored with spacious parks, plazas and governmental buildings anew. The Old Cathedral of Managua was built in the 1920s and though it sustained heavy damage during the earthquake, it still serves as a beautiful example of neoclassical design today. For more history, you can stand in Revolution Square, where Sandinistas celebrated after overthrowing the dictatorship over 40 years ago.

Water sports in Departamento de Managua

If you've swerved the capital in favor of exploring Nicaragua's nature, you can pick from a Departamento de Managua vacation rental along the coast or around the shores of Lake Managua. Both offer a long list of water sports, including paddle boarding, kite surfing and kayaking. If surfing is your thing, you can practice your pop up on some of the most consistently good surf swells in Central America, along the Pacific. Back in the capital, you could try your luck in one of the casinos, catch a Latin American flick at one of the movie theaters, or hit the shops for a little retail therapy.

Departamento de Managua is a year-round vacation spot

Other than September and October, when the country sees the most of its annual tropical downpours, you can book up a Departamento de Managua vacation rental at any time of year. Perhaps the best time is between November and May when the days are long and bright, and the rainfall is rare. It's also the busiest time, with vacationers jetting in to escape the below-freezing temperatures back home. Though the rest of the year does have the odd outburst, with the heavens opening most afternoons, the mornings can be sunny and hot, the beaches emptier and the rental prices take drop considerably.

Natural features

Nature in Departamento de Managua

You wouldn't have guessed it, but one of the best places for experiencing Nicaragua's awesome natural wonders is the Chiltepe Peninsula Natural Reserve just a few kilometers outside the capital Managua. It juts out into Lake Managua and is dominated by the Chiltepe Volcano. You don't have to look far when you arrive to start spotting the long list of resident species that call the park home. Be sure to get your camera ready for sightings of bounding deer, hopping rabbits and elusive coyote. Nearer the lake, you'll find iguanas basking in the sun and herons wading in the shallows.
