    The Roswell Incident

Roswell is perhaps known best for the infamous 1940s "Roswell Incident", in which a UFO supposedly crashed in the desert and was quickly covered up by the government. While this has since been proven false, sightings of UFOs in the area are still being reported today. In fact, many of the attractions are centered around aliens, with themed restaurants and museums. In Roswell, even McDonalds has a branch that is shaped like a flying saucer. If all that sounds too much, there are plenty of outdoor activities near your Roswell vacation rental.

Cool off in the tranquil cenotes

To escape the UFO obsession in town, you can drive 14 miles or so down to the Bottomless Lakes State Park. Located deep in the desert, you can walk around the series of azure cenotes carved out by the river. If you bring a picnic, you can settle down in a shady spot and take refreshing dips in the cool water or cast your line in to hook in a fish. For something a little more adrenaline-inducing, you can drive down to the 600-acre Mescalero Sands North Dune and hop onto motorcycles or ATVs to race through the sand.

It's not all about the UFOs

The mysterious sightings around Roswell have attracted UFO fanatics for decades and many of the small town's museums are based around alien life. One of the best is the International UFO Museum and Research Center which tries to keep a balanced view on their existence. There is more to the town than just extraterrestrial exhibits through. Near your Roswell vacation rental, you'll also find the Anderson Museum of Contemporary Art, a military museum and the fascinating Robert H Goddard Planetarium, which hosts a wide selection of events and science programs for kids.

    Visit between September and November

Unlike much of the rest of the US, the most agreeable time to visit Roswell weather-wise is after the summer season, between September and November. During this time the temperature can be gloriously warm, without being overbearing. You've also got the added bonus of it being outside the school breaks and therefore the Roswell vacation rental prices are great value. Summer sees the biggest influx of travelers driving into town, but the desert weather can be sizzling. In the winter, you've got the snowy Sierra Blanca Peak to explore by ski or snowboard, just 2 hours away.

    Spot roadrunners and dragonflies

Just a few miles away from your Roswell vacation rental is the Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge, a wetland habitat which teems with wildlife. To give an indication as to the astonishing number of creatures, there are more than 75 recorded species of dragonfly alone. As you cross the sandy dunes and grasslands, you'll likely spot the odd roadrunner or two, migrating sandhill cranes and shy horned lizards basking in the hot desert sunshine. Alternatively, the town has a zoo with everything from mountain lions to black bears, in exhibits that span a 34-acre site.
