You can take a Trolley Tour of the downtown area and see the location of all the shops and museums. The Military Heritage Museum has free admission, and the Muscle Car Museum has one of the largest displays of classic automobiles in the country.


The many waterfront parks are open to the public and they make up a large part of the peninsula. Many of the parks have shelters, playgrounds, restrooms and water fountains. Gilchrist Park covers eleven acres along Charlotte Harbor and includes a basketball court, jogging trail and fishing pier.

Perched on the shores of Charlotte Harbor, Punta Gorda is definitely a walkable city. Some of the buildings have murals painted on them by talented local artists. The historic and charming downtown of Punta Gorda is only one mile from Fisherman's Village, another attraction.

Fisherman's Village

Home to a 98-slip marina, Fisherman's Village also has boutiques, shops and fine dining in an indoor environment. The village is located on the Peace River as it flows into Charlotte Harbor. You can listen to live music there just about any day, including banjo playing and acoustic guitar.

Peace River Wildlife Center

The center is a rehabilitation stop for injured wildlife from the area. Most of them are returned to the wild, but some are residents for life. Located at the edge of Ponce de Leon Park, it's home to eagles, hawks, sandhill cranes and small mammals.

Outdoor Activities

Boat and Jet-Ski Rentals

The marina is one of the favorite stopping places for local boaters. Visitors can rent boats or jet-skis for an hour or for the day. You can charter a yacht or rent a small boat, and guided tours are available as well.

Fishing Cruises

There are three charter fishing companies that offer expeditions to catch sea fish like tarpon, amberjack, grouper and kingfish. Harbor fishing tours are available in addition to the deep sea cruises.


Seminole Lakes Golf Club is located in Punta Gorda and is open to the public. Altogether, there are nearly two dozen golf courses within an hour's drive of the city.

In February, Punta Gorda hosts a Wine and Jazz Festival featuring top artists. In March, there are culinary walking tours and Funk Fest. Every month has some kind of special event, along with regular ones like the Wednesday Night Pub Stroll.

The Celtic Ray Public House is one of the most popular dining destinations in Punta Gorda. The restaurant offers Irish food in a relaxed atmosphere and has a strong selection of imported beers.

River City Grill

This is another popular dining spot in Punta Gorda. Located two blocks away from the charming downtown, the River City Grill has a good selection of wines to go with the eclectic menu.


Punta Gorda is in the temperate zone of Florida and the weather is warm and humid. Summers are hot, with temperatures in the low nineties, and there is no dry season. October through April, the weather is mild, and daily average temperatures hover in the sixties or seventies.

How to Get There

Punta Gorda is located just west of I-75 on the Gulf of Mexico. From the west coast of Florida, you can get there from FL 70 W and U.S. 17 W from the north or FL 80 W and I-75 N if you're coming from the south. The closest major airport is Southwest Florida Regional Airport (RSW), 38 miles southeast of the City of Ft. Meyers. There is access to I-75 N from the airport to Punta Gorda, and rental cars and taxis are available.
