An Oistins vacation is Barbados in a (rum) bottle

Ask anyone who's just got back from Barbados what their favorite bit of the vacation was, and odds are they'll tell you it was the Oistins fish fry, a weekly party that sees the beachfront come alive with locals and travelers alike, all giving it some to a reggae soundtrack. An Oistins vacation rental is everything that's best about Barbados. Think sandy beaches, laid-back bars and restaurants, and unfeasibly friendly locals. This cute little fishing village has a real atmosphere about it, and by the time your flight home rolls around, you'll be praying for engine trouble.

Friday fun with Oistin's fantastic frying flying fish

An Oistins vacation rental is all about those beaches. Maxwell Beach is for back-to-basics picnics and watersports, Miami Beach is a bit livelier—and popular with bodyboarders—while Enterprise Beach offers more sheltered waters, ideal for kids. Oistins has its own beach too, a bustling spot with plenty of fishing boats out on the water. And Oistins really likes its fish, especially the Bajan delicacy, flying fish. The annual fish festival each Easter sees awards and competitions, while one of the most popular traditions on Barbados is the Oistins' weekly fish fry on Friday nights—a street party by any other name.

See the only thing on Barbados that's ever been in a hurry

Outside of Oistins itself, lots of vacationers in this part of Barbados like to make for Saint Lawrence Gap. Stretching 1.5 km along the beachfront, it's a seriously easygoing strip of eateries, rum bars, nightlife, and shops. You're well placed for excursions with an Oistins vacation rental, and for anyone feeling supersonic, nearby Grantley Adams International has its very own museum of high-speed travel, the Concorde Experience. A little further afield, the city of Bridgetown is just 10 km away. It's the capital of Barbados, with plenty of museums and historic buildings, plus tours of the Mount Gay Rum Distillery

Why bring both a raincoat and a sunhat to Oistins?

The people of Barbados know the value of a good umbrella. Keeps the rain off when it's raining, and the sun off when it isn't. Barbados has a tropical climate, with a wet season that runs between June and December, and a drier one filling in between January and May. It's hot all year round, but the coast gets some refreshing breezes, so hopefully the only thing that's going to be frying on your Oistins vacation rental is that fresh fish. The busiest times (and most expensive rates) are between January and April, so if you're looking for lower rates, plan accordingly.

Are the steering wheels on the right side or the wrong side?

Oistins is down on the southern coast of Barbados. With its azure-blue seas, sandy beaches, coral reefs and rum-soaked sunsets, Barbados pretty much ticks all the boxes of the dream Caribbean vacation, despite the fact that the island's technically in the Atlantic Ocean. You'll notice from the fact that they speak English and drive on the left that Barbados used to be a British colony, and it's still part of the British Commonwealth. In fact, it's so popular with British vacationers that you might want to keep an eye on UK school holidays if you're looking for quieter times to visit.
