Stunning Poipu, Kauai Provides Natural Attractions Tranquility for Everyone

It is no accident that Kauai is named the Garden Isle. This lush and stunningly beautiful Hawaiian island has been the backdrop for many a blockbuster film and on-location set movie over the decades. Here visitors can find any type and pace of vacation that they are looking for, fast or slow. With an amazing variety of outdoor attractions and activities for couples and families alike, everyone is sure to be entertained and impressed by this quite possibly loveliest natural spot in the Pacific Ocean. Rental condos and houses alike cater to visitors who want to experience what the feel of life is like in this gem of a paradise destination of Poipu inKauai.

Museum & Shopping Town

En route to Poipu, visitors will pass through a charming historical museum and shopping town named Koloa. This beautiful little spot is full of the important history of Hawaii and is well worth the time for a visit. The very first sugar plantation town in the entire formerly kingdom and state was built here. There are countless free historical displays lining the Koloa History Center; these small and no-cost displays provide a good idea of what life was like here in the difficult plantation years.

More interestingly still is the fact that a great number of the town's historical storefronts are now restored to appear as they originally did in the years of the late 1800's. It's true that these shops now sell touristy items, such as food and surf gear here as most stores throughout the island do, yet the atmosphere for buying these common everyday items here is more unique that in other places on Kauai. Among the oldest churches on the island are also found here, as well as an old but interesting Salvation Army building, and the Lappert's Ice Cream store has a location here also.

Outdoor activities

Spouting Horn

One of the tremendous natural wonders that Kauai boasts around its magnificent shores is the Spouting Horn Beach, found in Spouting Horn Beach Park on the South Shore near Poipu. In this rugged stretch of shoreline, there is an unusual opening amidst the lava shelf. As waves rush in, water finds itself forced through the hole and then sprayed out in the air even hundreds of feet high. This phenomenon is well worth stopping to see, especially with kids.

Swimming & Seal-Watching

Poipu Beach Park

Poipu also boasts what is likely the most popular beach on all of Kauai's fantastically beautiful South Shore. The swimming here is safe and calm with easy access and facilities like picnic tables. Visitors can also see a rare tombolo here, these little narrow stretches of sand or land that takes walkers out from the beach to a point in the sea. In the right tide, ocean waves cut off the tombolo from the two sides, leaving the points to look like veritable islands. You can see monk seals resting here often times.

Hawaii has a reputation for some of the most beautiful and perfect weather on the planet, and Poipu, Kauai does not let down this rep. In January, average temperatures range from 65 to 78 Fahrenheit, with 3.8 inches of average rainfall. In June, these temperatures vary from 73 to 83 Fahrenheit with a 1.6 inches of average rainfall.

Thanks to all-year-round good weather, any time of the year is the best time to visit. The rainiest and wettest month of the year is December with 5.2 inches, followed by March's 4.6 inches and November's 4.5 inches, so to avoid having some of the beach days rained out it might best to avoid these three dicier months.

How to Get There

Flights to Lihue, the only commercial airport on Kauai, are provided by a number of airlines as direct, non-stop flights from the mainland USA and Canada.

Hawaiian Airlines is the only airline company that serves with inter-island flights from the various outer islands and Kauai's own Lihue Airport. Availability varies depending on the time of the year.

By cruise ship you can get to Kauai and Poipu from San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Vancouver, British Columbia on cruises that range from 15 days and up and call at Kauai's one cruise liner terminal.
