Mountains and beaches in beautiful La Gomera

A La Gomera vacation rental might be top choice for a winter sun destination, but La Gomera has much to offer visitors throughout the year. The cloud-topped volcanic mountainsides of this Canary Island are crisscrossed with scenic hiking paths with breathtaking views over the island and the ocean, before falling dramatically to the lower slopes, dotted with vineyards, palms, banana trees and tiny villages clinging to the rocky hillsides. Eventually, the mountains reach the Atlantic culminating in quiet black-sand rural beaches and busy pebbly beaches and stretches of sand by the main towns of the island.

Things to do

Exploring La Gomera's history and culture

The ferry to La Gomera docks in San Sebastian, reputedly Christopher Columbus's last port of call in 1492 before setting sail for the Americas. The old part of town boasts several Columbus-themed attractions as well as pretty squares, bars and restaurants in which to relax and soak up some sunshine – and even be treated to some demonstrations of the unique whistling language of the Gomeros. Discover more at the Archaeological Museum of La Gomera in San Sebastian or at the tiny Molino de Gofio, 12 km away in Hermigua. Here, the agricultural traditions and the lives of the Gomeros are explored in the botanical garden, farm and museum.

Head to the beach on La Gomera

Despite its tiny size, La Gomera is blessed with many fine beaches, the most popular being the scenic Valle Gran Rey, which is dotted with lazy palm trees and picturesque cliff faces which will have anyone reaching for their camera. Another popular draw is pretty Playa de Santiago. On the southside of the island, this small fishing port claims to be La Gomera's sunniest spot and has a tranquil harborside promenade, as well as a pebble beach where you can wander and gaze out at the scenic panorama of the sea.

Soak up some winter sun in La Gomera

A La Gomera vacation rental is a popular choice for winter sun, with temperatures remaining as high as the 60s through the winter months. By May, temperatures are heading into the 70s with summer highs often into the 80s. Spring is the best time to whale watch or spot dolphins from one of the boat tours that set sail from the harbor at Playa de Santiago. If you're staying at a La Gomera vacation rental between March and early June, this is an unmissable treat for wildlife lovers. The cooler fall months are popular with hikers and bikers. There are numerous places where you can hire a bike to explore inland. Or, for a different way to explore, how about a donkey safari?

Natural features

La Gomera's National Park

La Gomera has countless kilometers of trails, ranging from gentle pathways for relaxing day trips to challenging routes for experienced hikers. The center of the island climbs to the lofty Garajonay rock formation in Garajonay National Park, the highest point on the island. Many of the Park's higher slopes are covered in sub-tropical laurel rainforest and are frequently hidden in cloud. The road to Garajonay from San Sebastian also boasts the tall craggy rockfaces of Los Roques. The most dramatic, Roque de Agando, is a popular viewpoint. Climbing is now banned so visitors must stick to the trails to protect this sacred spot.
