The Smithsonian National Zoo is a Metro ride from the National Mall area. It is open every day except December 25, and admission is always free. The zoo is home to over 2000 animals from 400 species. The giant pandas are a huge attraction for many, but there are many other interesting animals as well.
The weather is variable in Washington, DC, depending on the season. The average temperature in the summer is 80F while the average winter temperature is 38F. Summer days can be sunny and often feel hot and humid. The winter months occasionally see snow and sleet, but other days are simply cold and sunny. Spring and Fall months have moderate temperatures, in the 60s and 70s with some days full of sun, and others are rainy, especially in April. Spring is a beautiful time to visit Washington, DC, especially if you can catch the Cherry Blossom Festival which occurs in mid-March through mid-April.
You can travel by car to get to Washington, DC though driving around the city can be challenging. Many properties do offer free parking and then the DC Metro and Metro Busses can be used to get around easily. Rental cars are also an option if you don’t want to put long distance mileage on your personal car. Amtrack trains travel directly to Union Station in DC, where one can then catch a Metro to get just about anywhere in the city.
