Hikers, bikers, and nature lovers will all have amazing experiences in this mountainous region. This summit is the highest peak of the southern Front Range of the Rocky Mountains. Located in the Pike National Forest, it is a highly visible peak. Pike’s Peak is a hiker’s dream come true. With many trails of varying difficulties and elevations in the region, the most experienced hikers will attempt to hike to the summit. Those who are not in top physical condition can drive or take the Cog Railway to the top. Once there, the panoramic scenery is phenomenal and well worth the trip.
The Garden of the Gods is located in a park northwest of Colorado Springs. The highlights are the sandstone structures that are found throughout the park. While pondering their formation process, the naturally formed structures are amazing to look at. Additionally, a Visitors Center and Nature Center can give more information about how these pillars originated. Also nearby is Mueller State Park. There, you will find hiking, biking, and cross country ski trails. Moreover, wildlife abounds throughout the park with sightings of elk, eagles, and bears.
The downtown area of Colorado Springs was designated a Creative District by the state. One will find art and other creative sculpture around the area. There are many art galleries to visit as well. Plus, you can attend numerous special events and festivals throughout the district each year. In addition, the Fine Arts Center can be found nearby. Inside the center, you will find museum galleries of art, theatre, and art classes.
With so many outdoor activities, one may forget about the many museums to visit in this region. The Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum, for example, offers visitors a chance to follow the history of Colorado Springs from a mining town to a vibrant tourist attraction. Similarly, the Western Museum of Mining and Industry shows visitors what it was like to be a miner. Guided tours are informative and special events at the museum are often geared towards children.
The weather in this region of Colorado is variable and highly dependent on elevation. Winters are cold, with high temperatures averaging in the low 40s. The town has about 41 inches of snow each year. Summers are warmer with abundant sunshine. Average high temperatures are in the mid-80s. Spring and fall see average temperatures in the 60s and 70s. Anytime is a nice time to visit this area. If you are looking to hike Pike’s Peak and visit parks, however, you will probably want to come in the summertime.
Car travel is a popular way to arrive in this region. Whether you use your personal car or a rental car, the highways and roads are plentiful and easy to navigate. Flying into the area is also easy.
