Destination guide

The legend of Bathsheba

Legend has it that King David's wife Bathsheba used to bath in milk to keep her skin soft. The white foamy waves that lap onto the coast along this Barbadian town are said to resemble her bath, hence the name of this idyllic destination. While most visitors tend to stay in the built-up resort areas of this Caribbean island, those who come to the rugged east coast are treated to long stretches of sandy beach, far fewer tourists, local rum shops, quint churches, plenty of activities and seafront eateries. This isolated part of Barbados doesn't disappoint.

Things to do

Colorful orchids and heliconia

If you can drag yourself away from the beach and pools, there are some interesting attractions you're not going to want to miss. Just down the road from your Bathsheba vacation rental, you can visit the 6-acre Andromeda Botanical gardens which teem with colorful orchids, heliconia, cacti and winding bougainvillea. A bubbling stream cuts through the gardens, creating little pools and waterfalls. Continue a further down the coast and visit Hackleton's Cliff. Legend has it that the cliff is named after a man rode his horse right off its edge. Come here for some of the most spectacular views on the island.

Surf the consistent rollers

If you're lucky enough to nab an oceanfront Bathsheba vacation rental, bring your surfboard because you're not going to want to miss the famous Soup Bowl – the foamy, consistent rollers which come in from the Atlantic Ocean. While you're there, soak in the Bathsheba Pools carved out of coral reef, a favorite place to cool off in the summer midday heat. You can even join one of the famous rum punch parties at the pools, the perfect introduction to Barbados' relaxed lifestyle. Alternatively, find a secluded little spot on the beach nearby and settle in to some serious sun worshipping.

Something for all seasons

This Caribbean island basks in sunshine almost all year round, with temperatures hovering between mid-70s and mid-80s. Unlike its neighbors, it rarely suffers from hurricanes. Peak season is from December through April, and if you plan to visit during this time you'll need to book your Bathsheba vacation rental early. Over the summer months, the sizzling temperature brings in the occasional rainfall, but this just serves to cool everything down, and the showers rarely last longer than a couple of hours. So, what are you waiting for? Barbados awaits you any time of year.

Natural features

Swim with leatherback turtles

Everywhere you look on Barbados you'll likely spot wildlife, from the green monkeys, ambling mongoose, crooking toads or red-footed tortoises. However, the highlight for many is seeing the island's population of leatherback and hawksbill turtles that swim around the colorful corals. You'll be pleased to hear that these endangered creatures are being monitored by the Barbados Sea Turtle Project which is ensuring these beautiful creatures are going to be here for generations to come. Birders won't be disappointed by the sightings of herons wading in the shallows, buzzing hummingbirds or resident falcons.
