Magnificent Minnesota: Land of 10,000 Lakes

Minnesota is a large, centrally located state that is bordered by Canada and Lake Superior. With a landscape that includes thousands of lakes, lush forests and sophisticated urban destinations, Minnesota is an enjoyable place to visit for sightseeing, urban adventures and outdoor sports. The southern part of the state is part of the Great Plains and offers several urban centers to explore for entertainment with your significant other while the northern part of the state is quite remote and is filled with forests and beautiful lakes that are perfect for a relaxing fishing or camping trip with the family.

Explore the Lakes

The North Shore Drive is a scenic route that follows the shore of Lake Superior all the way north to Ontario, Canada. There are many beautiful attractions and views along this forested route, including several waterfalls and the Split Rock Lighthouse State Park. Fishing is a popular pastime, with fish such as walleye, northern pike and bass. In the winter, skiing, ice skating and ice fishing can be enjoyed by visitors to the area.

Split Rock Lighthouse

Split Rock Lighthouse State Park is located 20 miles north of Two Harbors, and it is the location of the beautiful 1910 Split Rock Lighthouse. Visitors to the park can enjoy a tour of the lighthouse complex, including the foghorn building, the lightkeeper's house and the lighthouse tower.

Water Sports

Minnesotans enjoy boating, swimming and water skiing during Minnesota’s steamy summers. Plentiful lakes of every size offer a variety of sporting opportunities for visitors. Renting a canoe or kayak is a wonderful way to explore the natural area and for viewing wildlife such as bear, deer and moose. Motorized boats are permitted on many lakes as well.

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness

The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness is tucked in the forests of Minnesota along the Canadian border. It is a much-loved destination for paddlers in North America for canoe and kayaking trips along with backpacking and fishing. The remote area encompasses millions of acres of land for a remote wilderness experience.

Shopping and Dining

The Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are home to many fine establishments for shopping and dining. State-of-the-art urban experiences are easily found in this modern metro area that is home to nearly 60 percent of Minnesota’s population.

Mall of America

Near the St. Paul-Minneapolis Airport in the suburb of Bloomington is the Mall of America which is the largest shopping mall in the United States. The mall was opened in 1992 and receives over 40 million visitors a year. The mall contains many large, well-known retailers and is also home to an indoor amusement park.

Minnesota enjoys warm, humid summers and cold winters that are ideal for snow sports. Your winter wardrobe should include a variety of warm clothing, including hats, gloves and boots. Summers may be uncomfortably warm but that is tempered by the opportunity for many water sports, such as waterskiing and boating. Depending on your interests, Minnesota can be a wonderful place to visit any time of the year.

How to Get There

Minnesota’s central location means that it is easy to find a variety of travel methods and routes to reach your destination. Commercial airline service flies to the main hub of the Minnesota-St. Paul airport and to other smaller airports as well. Train, bus and ferry service is available throughout the state, and traveling by private car or rental car will allow you to explore the natural beauty of Minnesota.
