Edisto Island vacation rentals

Nature and heritage collide in Edisto Island

Edisto Island is a secluded South Carolina Sea Island – one of many in South Carolina’s heritage and nature-rich Charleston County – which overlooks the shimmering-blue Atlantic Ocean. Edisto Island vacation rentals range from romantic ocean-view retreats and cozy cabanas to quaint cottages and beachside manors. Wildlife enthusiasts can wander around the state parks and nature reserves, while history buffs get to grips with the island’s Civil War heritage – or maybe you’ll just want to relax on one of the wide beaches with a sweet, fruit-infused cocktail…

Outdoor adventures around Edisto Island

There are plenty of Edisto Island activities on offer to keep families and energetic outdoor enthusiasts occupied. You can hike or bike through the winding, forest-covered trails of Edisto Beach State Park, spotting birdlife and discovering ancient Native American relics, such as the 2,000-year-old midden, a decorative mound of sea shells. At the beach itself, try your hand at specialist surf fishing – where you wade into the surf and cast a line – or head out into the blue-green Atlantic waters on a kayak or boat trip.

Plantations and military history on Edisto Island

It may be difficult to leave your Edisto Island vacation rental, but there are plenty of captivating cultural attractions to discover across the island. Brush up on the island’s history at the Edisto Island Museum, which displays artefacts from the old cotton plantations and military relics from the Civil War. For a mix of history and wildlife, explore the Botany Bay Plantation Heritage Preserve and Wildlife Area. Here, you can see 3 preserved timber outbuildings from the original plantation – which date back to the 1840s – and amble through the peaceful pine forest.

Edisto Island in fall is bright and balmy

Edisto Island, like all of Charleston County, has a humid subtropical climate, characterized by short and balmy winters and long, hot, and humid summers, with honey-like sunshine and thunderstorms served up in equal measure. The humidity at the height of summer – June through September – can get a little difficult to cope with, although the oceanfront areas of the island do benefit from a cooling sea breeze, and plenty of Edisto Island vacation rentals offer air conditioning. To really enjoy all the outdoor wonders the island has to offer, travel in the fall, when the rain and humidity taper off.

Wondrous wildlife in Edisto Island

Edisto Island is based 43 miles southwest of the city of Charleston, the oldest and largest city in South Carolina, with its wealth of museums, historical houses, Southern-cooking restaurants, and live music venues. The northern end of the island is marked-off by the Ernest F. Hollings Ace Basin National Wildlife Refuge – a melee of antebellum plantation relics, mangrove, and live oak – while the Edisto Beach State Park sits toward the southern end of the island’s shoreline. The vast array of wildlife on the island includes alligators, eagles, slithering snakes, and loggerhead turtles.
