Make a St. Maarten or St. Martin villa, condo, or vacation rental your home away from home in this Caribbean island paradise.

This 37-square mile island, 160 miles east of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean Sea, is shared by two nations. The southern side of the island (St. Maarten) is governed by the Dutch, while the northern part (St. Martin) is under French rule. Visitors travel freely across the border, which is marked only by a sign. While both parts of the island offer gorgeous beaches and plenty of water activities, the cultures are quite different.

The Dutch capital of Philipsburg, located on Great Bay, is a popular cruise ship port and is known for its energetic night life. Guests of St. Maarten villas and vacation rentals will find an abundance of duty-free shopping in Phililpsburg.

The French side of the island is reminiscent of the South of France, with sidewalk cafes and French cuisine. This part of the island is quieter and less crowded, and the capital city of Marigot is more laid-back than Philipsburg. The Musee de Marigot features a collection of artifacts representing the pre-Columbian history of the island. Guests of St. Martin vacation rentals will find several good restaurants in the small fishing village of Grand-Case, about 20 minutes from Marigot.

With 37 beaches and a reef system surrounding the island, guests of St. Maarten and St. Martin vacation rentals will have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the clear turquoise water. The 500 species of reef fish delight divers and snorkelers. Dawn Beach, on the east side of the island, offers easy access to the reef just offshore. Off the northeastern shore of St. Martin is an underwater preserve, Reserve Sous-Marine Regionale.
