A vacation spot for over a century

Owasco Lake's name comes from an Iroquios word meaning bridge over the water. In the 19th century it flourished and became a top spot for luxury vacationers who came by railroad to relax by the water and gamble in the casino. The area will forever be immortalized by the piano pieces called "Owasco Memories" by the composer Arthur Farwell. Though the casino is no longer there – it burned down in the early 20th century – travelers still flock to Owasco Lake vacation rentals to hike through the forests, cool down in the lake and launch their yachts onto the waters.

A year-round adventure playground

The area offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures throughout the year. The lake and the state parks nearby provide an abundance of activities from hiking or mountain biking along the forested trails to gliding across the surface of the water by paddleboard or canoe. For those looking for a little more peace and quiet, try nearby Emerson Park located towards the north of the lake, where refreshing swims and picnics along the sunny banks are the order of the day. Everything is easily reachable from the Owasco Lake vacation rentals.

Calling all history buffs

Culture vultures and history buffs will be amazed at the sheer number of museums and sites to explore. From your Owasco Lake vacation rental you can visit the Fort Hill Cemetery used by the Native Americans for thousands of years. Alternatively, the Harriet Tubman Home and the Seward House Museum offer a glimpse back to the lives of the most notable figures in the area's history over the last few centuries. While staying at your Owasco Lake vacation rental, be sure to visit the Willard Memorial Chapel, designed by Louis C. Tiffany.

Summer is best for Owasco Lake

To make the most of Owasco and the rest of the Finger Lakes, visit between May and September. If you're lucky enough to nab a Owasco Lake vacation rental during the summer, you'll enjoy continual dry and sunny days best used for hiking or cooling off in the lake. Even in the height of summer, the nights can get a little chilly, so bring a light sweater. Outside the high season, the fall is cooler, but arguably more scenic as the forests burst into a kaleidoscope of orange and golden hues. Winter, meanwhile, offers plenty of snowy activities.

Croaking toads and hooting owls

Owasco and the Finger Lakes have a range of habitats that support an incredibly diverse list of wildlife species. At night, it's not uncommon to hear the heavy croaking of toads and the hooting of owls in the trees around the lake. Though they are hard to spot, the lakes teem with marine life. Casting your line into the waters can reveal any number of species from salmon to trout and perch to sturgeon, not to mention the crayfish and Dungeness crabs. During spring, the forests come alive with colorful butterflies and sweet-smelling wildflowers.
