The bustling hub of Costa Rica

Located in the fertile Central Valley, San Jose is the capital and economic hub of Costa Rica. While most travelers pass right through, those who do decide to stay in a San Jose vacation rental are treated to tasty restaurants, vibrant bars and nightlife, fascinating museums and some of the friendliest locals in Latin America. Around the historic neighborhood of Barrio Amon, much of the colonial architecture has been revamped to house contemporary art galleries and boutiques. Outside the city, you can easily visit the smoky Poas Volcano. Come here before everyone else discovers this gem.

    Scratch below the surface

Scratch under the surface of San Jose and you'll discover a side to this capital that you won't find in any guide book. If you join one of the walking tours that depart from downtown San Jose, you'll begin to understand the history, art and hidden spots only known by locals. Alternatively, the golf courses are surprisingly good outside the city and you can easily while away a few hours swinging your clubs and going for a hole-in-one. Outside of the city, the valley's landscape lends to hiking and rafting and is easily reached from San Jose vacation rentals.

    Thousands of years of history

San Jose and the rest of Costa Rica has had a long and fascinating history. There is no better place to understand it than at the Museo de Oro Precolombino, the Gold Museum. Here, you can admire more than 1,500 pre-Columbian gold works dating back over 1,000 years. The Museo Nacional is also a fascinating place to while away a morning and brims with pre-Columbian artifacts as well as a large butterfly garden. If you want to discover Costa Rican art, be sure not to miss the Museo de Arte (MADC), the country's most well-established art institution.

    Warm weather in San Jose

The climate in San Jose can be a little changeable, but is typically warm and bright for most of the year. The temperature hovers around 75 degrees, though due to the city's elevation, it can dip a little at night. The high season starts in December and runs through to April. If you plan to travel during this time, particularly around Christmas and New Year, be sure to book up your San Jose vacation rental early as it does get busy. If you travel between the end of April and November, the city sees a little afternoon rain.

    The majestic Poas volcano

Poas Volcano is one of Costa Rica's most visited natural wonders. Lying in the province of Alajuela north of San Jose, the smoky volcano sits more than 2,700 meters above sea level and is a stark reminder of the geo-thermal forces which created much of the country. The sunken crater, which has beguiled experts for decades, is the biggest active volcano in the world. The deep lake is fed by rainwater and can be seen from the wooden boardwalks above, although potential visitors should check to see if the volcano area has been closed for safety reasons.
