Sister Lakes, Michigan, is a quiet community located near Lake Michigan in the southwestern corner of the state. People come to Sister Lakes to enjoy the summertime farmer's markets and the many outdoor recreational opportunities. You can stay at rental houses, cottages and cabins while visiting the Sister Lakes area. The Sister Lakes area offers a variety of events that are enjoyable for the whole family. The Sister Lakes 4th of July Parade is a popular event celebrating the nation's independence. The parade features handmade floats, music played by marching bands and vintage cars driven alone the parade route. At Krazy Daze, the kids can enter a jumping contest or try out their skills at the Silly Slalom. This event takes place each year in March at the Boyne Highlands, just a few miles from the Sister Lakes. You could drive up to northern Michigan and stay at rental cottages in Mackinaw City while enjoying the annual Port Huron to Mackinac Island Yacht Race, which takes place each July. The Sister Lakes area offers many opportunities for outdoor activities. Each year in February, the Fenner Nature Center offers maple syrup testing and sampling. Wear warm clothes to this event and prepare to enjoy some freshly made maple syrup. You can also drive about 10 miles to Lake Michigan and rent a fishing boat and poles to try your hands at fishing. Ice fishing is popular on the smaller inland lakes of the Sister Lakes region during the wintertime. If you'd like to see another one of the Great Lakes, Lake Huron, you could drive across the state and stay at cottages in Port Huron after a day doing the Blue Water River Walk. The Blue Water River Walk takes you on a tour of the Black River where it flows into Lake Huron near the Blue Water Bridge to Canada.
The Sister Lakes area is home to many family-owned and -operated stores, including groceries and antique shops. In the downtown Dowagiac area, you can visit the Five Mile Corners and enjoy hand scooped ice cream in the summer as you browse through the candy and soda shop, bookstores and boutiques. If you'd like to do some upscale shopping, drive across Michigan's lower peninsula and visit the Briarwood Mall or Galleria Mall while staying at rental houses in Ann Arbor.
Wintertime is cold in the Sister Lakes, with January high temperatures reaching about 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Summertime is warm, with July high temperatures about 82 degrees. The best time to visit Sister Lakes, Michigan, is in September and October, as the weather is mild and the water in the lakes is still warm.
To get to Sister Lakes, you can drive your own vehicle or rent a car, using M-51 and M-62 to travel through the area. You can also fly to the Sister Lakes area through Dowagiac Municipal Airport, which services small private jets. Nearby Dowagiac has an Amtrak station with daily service from Chicago and Detroit.
