Fairhaven vacation rentals

Ocean fun and leaves in fall – visit the fairest of them all

Fairhaven is likely one of the most beautiful small towns on the East Coast, with a historic downtown featuring noted architectural landmarks and walkable tree-lined streets that lead to the ocean. This seaside community on the shore of Buzzards Bay shares a harbor with the famed whaling port of New Bedford, but Fairhaven has its own whaling history to be proud of, not to mention an American Revolutionary War-era fort. The fall foliage is spectacular, and the beaches, boat launches, and bike trails aren't bad either.

A schedule you'll like – walk, beach, bike

The town is a paradise for walkers and bikers. If your Fairhaven vacation rental is near the Visitor's Center, you can stroll to the starting point of your walking tour of downtown's historic highlights. In summer, travelers love the beach at Fort Phoenix State Reservation park. For a day of frolicking on the beach and biking, followed by more beach fun, pedal from Fort Phoenix across the causeway to West Island Town Beach, a small, sandy island free of crowds but full of great kayaking. You can also launch your boat or kayak from Hoppy's Landing, between Nasketucket and Buzzards Bay.

A veritable haven of history and culture

Vacationers would do well to pair a beach day at Fort Phoenix State Reservation with a visit to the fort itself. Built in 1775, Fort Phoenix is within sight of the first naval battle of the American Revolution. Another can't-miss sight in town is the Millicent Library, designed by noted architect Charles Brigham and described by Mark Twain as "the ideal library." It features a collection of memorabilia that narrates the the tale of Manjiro Nakahama, who spent time in Fairhaven as one of the first Japanese people to visit the United States.

Fair skies and fairly frequent showers in Fairhaven

Fairhaven has a humid, subtropical climate, which means that the ocean takes the edge off extreme temps, but the region still sees dramatic changes with the seasons. Highs are in the 30s and 40s in winter, when you can likely find a Fairhaven vacation rental at a bargain price. Summer temps reach the 80s and low 90s. Fall is a popular time of year for families, friends, and honeymooners. The autumn leaves will leave you in awe. Pack your favorite rain boots, whatever the season. Precipitation is always a possibility.

If it's winged or wet, you can find it in Fairhaven

A couple of spots in particular seem tailor-made for nature lovers. If your Fairhaven vacation rental is near the Phoenix Bike Trail, you're in luck. You can ride to the 70-acre Little Bay Conservation Area. Its pier stretches out into Buzzards Bay, offering excellent fishing and views of the surrounding saltmarsh. You can also explore coastal farmland and forests on Shaw Farm Trail. It connects to the bike path as well, and offers trails criss-crossing streams and wetlands, perfect for birdwatching, running, and hiking.
