Find the best place to stay — Casco Bay

The East Coast's San Francisco

Casco Bay is a large inlet in southern Maine. The capital of the region is Portland _ not to be confused with Portland, Oregon _ which has been dubbed the San Francisco of the East thanks to its reputation as a hub for art, culture, and dining. This is one of the Maine's foodie capitals with an emphasis on fresher than fresh seafood. In the bay, you can take a ferry out to the one of the little islands dotted with pretty white clapboard houses, while staying on one of the Casco Bay vacation rentals is the best way to explore the area.

Maritime adventure in Casco Bay

Casco Bay has a wealth of activities on offer. In Portland, there is an extensive trail system which you can use for walking or mountain biking. Down on the promenade, you can board one of the ferries to the islands or take a sunset cruise on an historic, wooden schooner. If you are staying in one of the Casco Bay vacations rentals with children, you can take them go-karting in Scarborough, to the wet and wild Funtown Splashtown park, with its rides and water slides, or to see a Portland Sea Dogs baseball game.

An art museum that packs a punch

The heart of Portland is the historic 19th-century downtown neighborhood where most of the Casco Bay vacation rentals, restaurants, and nightlife are located. It's a small city, but the Portland Museum of Art houses some big hitting names including works from Claude Monet and Andy Warhol. With over 18,000 pieces at the museum, you can easily while away a day here. Meanwhile, if you're a beer lover, you've come to the right place. The city has more than 15 different craft brewers of the amber nectar, and if you are confused about where to start, several tasting tours are on offer.

Mild coastal weather around Casco Bay

Casco Bay enjoys a relatively mild climate compared to the interior of Maine. During spring, the bays are warm and sunny. Tourism hasn't quite reached its peak, so it's a quieter time to visit. During summer, the temperature soars, but the breeze coming off the sea cools things down. It's the busiest time and the Casco Bay vacation rentals get booked up well in advance. Like the rest of Maine, the fall brings a kaleidoscope of colors to the trees, while winter sees some flurries of snow.

A diverse list of habitats and ecosystems

The region has several different habitats and ecosystems which work in harmony including the salt marshes, tidal mudflats, forests, and seagrass beds. Just as diverse is the array of wildlife which inhabits Casco Bay, including lobsters that hide around the underwater boulders, beavers and moose that roam the forests inland, and trout and perch which swim along the waterways, river systems, and the bay. Birders will find this one of the best places to see avifauna with coastal and migratory birds.
