Alpine's straight out of a spaghetti western
If there's any place that perfectly encompasses everything you've seen in a wild west movie, it's Alpine's southwest Texas landscape. This stunning slab of land is the high desert at its finest: vast plains for miles that are broken up with the Davis Mountains and the Chisos Mountains. Ya'll can drink in these views with most Alpine vacation rentals. The town itself sits at an elevation of 4,500 feet, and is the center of the Big Bend area's 1 million acres. Founded in the late 1800s, the town's maintained its traditional roots, with local mom-and-pop shops dominating the commerce.
Rock it out with Alpine's gorgeous geological attractions
Take the fam to the Museum of the Big Bend to explore the area's rich history and Native American artifacts. Alpine's remote area makes McDonald Observatory a must; you'll feel like you could reach up and grab a star. Then you can nerd it out at the nearby Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute and botanical garden, and after that, hike on the Blue Creek Trail, which winds through dry creek beds and vivid, towering rocks. Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park are geological wonders with fossils, dinosaur bones and archeological sites that date back 10,000 years.
One look at this red desert and you'll think you're on Mars
Alpine is literally the high desert, perched on a plateau that's 4,500 feet high and surrounded by miles of nothingness in the Chihuahuan Desert. You've got cool views of the Davis Mountains to the north and the Chisos Mountains to the south, plus some random outcrops of red volcanic rock that'll make you wonder if you've bypassed Earth and landed on Mars. The wildlife watching is oh-so-good here, and you can see roadrunners, golden eagles, wild boars and (if you're lucky) a cougar. And maybe the official animal of Texas, the armadillo.

The nearest airport is in Marfa, TX (MRF), located 20.8 mi (33.4 km) from the city center.
If you're traveling by train, the main station serving the city is Alpine Station.
