Four seasons of fun in Monticello
In the summertime, the lakes of Monticello, Indiana—Lake Freeman and Lake Shafer—created in the 1920s when two dams were built on the Tippecanoe River, are popular destinations for fishing, camping, boating, swimming and other lakeside activities. Lake Freeman is home to the Madam Carroll, the biggest cruise boat in Indiana, operating from April through October. In the winter, the two lakes are popular for ice-fishing and skating, while snowmobiling and cross-country skiing will get your heart racing. Warm, sunny summers and mild springs and falls make the theme park another prime destination.
Historic lakes and waterways of Monticello
Monticello vacation rentals give you the best access to the town of Monticello and to its two beautiful lakes. Lake Freeman is a reservoir outside of Monticello, formed in 1925 by the completion of the Oakdale Dam. Lake Shafer was created in 1923 with the construction of the Norway Dam. Just up the road from Lake Freeman and less than a mile from the winery, the Bill Altherr Nature Park is a worthwhile side trip where you can meander along its easy trails, including some paved trails, for even the smallest or least outdoorsy members of your group.
