The Steel City, the Gettysburg battlefield, the iconic Philly cheese steak - whether you’ve got your eye set on urban hot spots, monumental sites in American history or world-famous food, Pennsylvania has it all. And with HomeAway’s cozy houses and chalets, you can be close to all the action.

Philadelphia

Considered the birthplace of America and Pennsylvania’s largest city, Philadelphia is famous for its historic sites, cultural hot spots and, of course, Philly cheese steaks. Old City features chief landmarks like the Liberty Bell and Independence Mall. No trip to the city is complete without taking a tour of Independence Hall, where the U.S. Constitution and Declaration of Independence were written. For a vibrant downtown feel, be sure to make your way to Center City East. These streets are filled with happening cultural locales, including Chinatown and Gayborhood. Shoppers flock to Center City West on Chestnut and Walnut Streets to find the outdoor mall. Don’t forget to explore the Philadelphia Museum of Art - where the famous “Rocky” steps and statue are - for more than 227,000 works across all time periods and genres. The Impressionist paintings and furniture from the time period are a must-see.

For an authentic Philly cheesesteak, head to Delssandro’s in Roxborough for finely chopped beef on a thin roll. Pat’s on Passyunk Avenue whips up another local fave, with coarsely chopped beef and melting cheese. Philadelphia Center City Restaurant Week is great time to sample different flavors of the city.

Pittsburgh

Few pro football teams have a name that does as much justice to the city as the Pittsburgh Steelers. From the boom of the steel mining industry in the 1800s, this place built its grit and audacity from the ground up. Today, the vestiges remain. The biggest pieces of evidence may be the mammoth steel bridges across the Allegheny River in Pittsburgh’s Downtown and buildings in the Cultural District. Drive to Mount Washington, located south of downtown, for one of the best views of the city. If you’re looking for arts and culture, buy a ticket for at the Benedum Center, which hosts Broadway plays and musicals. You can find an eclectic mix of high-end boutiques, "ma and pa" businesses and specialty shops in the Strip District. Last but not least, the South Side tailors to late-night party-goers looking for a good time.

Harrisburg

Welcome to the Capital City. Take a 30-minute guided tour of the state capitol, which Teddy Roosevelt declared was the “handsomest building” he ever saw. Odds are, you’ll be equally impressed. The National Civil War Museum tells both sides of the story with acute and powerful detail. Many visitors have considered it a great preface to a Gettysburg visit. When you head downtown, you’ll find a haven for shoppers and foodies. Restaurant Row lies on 2nd Street, brimming with urban diners and a vibrant nightlife. For fine dining, try out Stocks on Second, and if a casual eatery is what you’re in the mood for, Fire House Restaurant fits the bill.

Gettysburg

History buffs will be blown away at Gettysburg. As the fulcrum for the Civil War, this small town resonates with patriotic meaning. Take a tour of the battlefield where more than 50,000 soldiers suffered casualties. Stand in the footprints of President Lincoln’s legendary speech, and absorb facts about the largest internal conflict the U.S. ever experienced The Gettysburg Museum of History is free to the public and displays 4,000 relics, ranging from Lincoln’s opera classes to JFK’s rocking chair. It also houses the biggest collection of Gettysburg artifacts in town.

Erie

Get back to basics and enjoy the natural landscape in Erie. Located on the northern tip of Pennsylvania and adjacent to the lake after which it’s named, Erie is a perfect place for water activities. During the summer months, families flock to the shores to cool off, while come fall, visitors and locals alike set sail to reel in some huge fish. This waterway is famous for its wealth of game fish, including trout, walleye and bass, among others. Rent a fishing charter boat for a day out on the lake, or if the kids have a different idea of fun, Splash Lagoon, the country’s largest indoor water park, will surely keep them entertained. Later, discover the lush greenery and go bird watching at Presque Isle State Park. Birder's World Magazine ranked it as one of the best spots in the U.S. for birding. All around, Erie is a true outdoor treasure.
