Oregon Destination Overview

The state of Oregon is located in the Pacific Northwest, and it's full of forests and lakes. It also abuts the Pacific Ocean, giving visitors and locals alike access to the shore. Oregon's landscape makes it a popular vacation destination for outdoor adventurers and nature enthusiasts, but you don't have to be either to enjoy a trip to the Beaver State. Consider reserving a vacation rental near one of these cities so you can take in Oregon at your own pace:

Salem: The Capital

Located in the northwest portion of Oregon, Salem is the capital. The city is just off the Willamette River, giving it a stunning view of the waterfront. What's more, you'll have access to plenty of attractions from your Salem vacation rental. Here are just a few of those exciting sites:

Silver Falls State Park

This park is a mere half hour drive from Salem, but it feels like a different world. The 9,200-square-foot area, which sits at the base of the Cascade Mountains, is aptly named. In fact, Silver Falls State Park is home to numerous waterfalls that visitors can walk behind. Strap on your boots and hike the Trail of Ten Falls, a trail so popular it attracts people from over the country. As you hike, you'll encounter a series of stunning waterfalls, each of which is several stories high.

Historic Deepwood Estate

Salem may offer visitors access to parks, but it's also home to historic sites, such as Deepwood Estate. Constructed in 1894 in the Queen Anne Victorian style, the Deepwood Estate is a prime example of the period's architecture. It rests on a sweeping lawn and is available for tours, events and weddings. When you tour the home, you'll see the expertly crafted stained glass windows and beautifully cared-for gardens.

Elsinore Theatre

Another historic site, Elsinore Theatre opened in 1926. The building was constructed in such a way that it looks like a castle out of a Shakespeare play, which is appropriate given its purpose. Since it's founding, Elsinore has hosted both live theater and films, and you can even see magic shows. Even if you don't get to see an event during your stay in Salem, you can still admire the building's architecture.

The Big City: Portland

Portland is the most populous city in Oregon. It's full of attractions both in the city center and nearby, so you're sure to have plenty to do when visiting. Located near the Willamette and Columbia Rivers, Portland boasts gorgeous scenery, which you'll be able to enjoy from your vacation rental. Here are a few sites and activities you won't want to miss:

Brewery Visits

Portland is home to a plethora of craft breweries, earning the city the nickname of Beervana. While you're staying in or near this drink capital, consider taking brewery tours or stopping by a venue to taste what all the buzz is about. A few Beervana big wigs include BridgePort Brewing, Lompoc Brewing, Hair of the Dog, Full Sail and Deschutes Brewery, though there are many more in the city. Don't forget to take a case or two home to enjoy in your vacation rental.

Mount Hood National Forest

Though a bit of a drive beyond the city limits (20 miles east), Mount Hood National Park is a worthy stop. At nearly 3,500 feet tall, Mount Hood is an awe-inspiring summit perfect for hiking, climbing and camping. The forest also allows horseback riding (if you'd like a unique vacation experience) and mountain biking. During the winter months, you're welcome to ski at Mount Hood.

Powell's City of Books

This chain book store has its flagship in Portland. Powell's City of Books is aptly named, as it contains more than 1.5 million new and used books. Sound like a lot to handle? Fortunately, you'll get a color-coded map of the store when you enter so you can find what you need.

City of Sunshine: Klamath Falls

Klamath Falls is located in the southern area of Oregon and has the nickname of the City of Sunshine. The metropolis is also near the Klamath River and Lake Ewauna. Though smaller than Salem and Portland, Klamath Falls has much to offer. In fact, vacation rentals nearby offer access to the following attractions:

Crater Lake National Park

This park is home to a lake created by an erupting volcano. The explosion left a giant crater in the Oregon landscape that, over eons, filled with water. On your hike of Crater Lake, you can stop at lookout points to view the water. From there, you'll also notice an island in the middle of the lake. During the winter, the park opens its cross-country ski routes. Klamath Falls is about 43 miles south of Crater Lake National Park.

Fort Klamath Museum and Park

Learn about early Western settlers by visiting the site of what used to be Fort Klamath. The museum lays out exactly what the fort would have looked like in its heyday.
