Travel through History at Gila Rentals

Unless you study New Mexican history or travel often to the state, you might not know what wonders Gila rentals can offer you. Gila is 30 miles outside of Silver City in the southwest region of the state. Gila houses are minutes from Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument and Gila National Forest. The town of Gila is unincorporated, meaning it is quite small and less populated than other tourist locales. If you want seclusion, history, and wildlife all in one package, Gila cabins are for you.

The Seven Hollows near Gila Houses

Gila and Cliff were two towns settled in 1884 by white settlers, who ranched and farmed the land. However, these individuals were not the first to find the land enjoyable. Instead Native Americans made their home in cliff dwellings 175 feet above the canyon floor. In a rough and desolate country near the west fork of Gila River are seven natural cavities. From Gila houses, the drive is about 10 minutes, where you can see five of the seven hollows that were turned into rooms. The Mogollons lived in the 13th century, and it is they who decided to make their home in the cliffs you are able to visit. Once you have seen the dwellings, do not return to Gila cabins just yet. There is a one-mile hiking trail that loops around the dwellings and visitor center.

Gila Cabins close to The Cliff Dwellings

The Cliff Dwellings Monument is part of the Gila National Forest near Gila cabins. The national forest occupies 3,000,000 acres of forest and rangeland. The land extends north to Lordsburg along the Big Burro Mountains. Pack a lunch at Gila rentals before heading out as you will definitely want to picnic in the forest with the wild ranges and many canyons. Some of the locations close to Gila houses in the forest were strongholds for the Apache warriors like Geronimo and Mangas Coloradas. Trails throughout the forest take you on short loops, long hikes, and the path of the warrior. In fact, there is a 110-mile trail in the park from Silver City to San Lorenzo over the Mountains Spirits Scenic Byway.

Tubing Down the River by Gila Rentals

Gila rentals are also near the Gila River, which supplies tourists with plenty of recreational activities on the water. You can go tubing or rafting down the river throughout the entire day and spend a few minutes eating lunch at Gila houses, before heading back out.
