Georgia Destination Overview

Fun in the Sun on St. Simons Island

The largest of the Golden Isle islands, St. Simons Island was voted America's No. 1 Favorite Romantic Town as well as America's No. 1 Favorite Beach Town by Travel Leisure Magazine in 2014. The 18-square-mile retreat caters to visitors who like to get their feet wet with aquatic sports and fill up on tasty eats.

Beaches:

Sun and sand steal the show at St. Simons Island. There are miles of untamed beaches - low tide exposes sand bars and tidal pools, perfect for kids to explore. Grab a cocktail at a local seaside bar or partake in the popular sport of kite surfing. Bicycling is also big around these parts and make sure to keep an eye for sea turtles that lay eggs on the shores.

Golf:

St. Simons Island is home to two public golf courses, yet combined with neighboring communities, Brunswick, Oak Grove Island, Jekyll Island and Sea Island, there are plenty of courses to play. Tee off at the newly renovated King and Prince Golf Course, an 18-hole championship course that's famous for its ancient forests and salt marshes. This is a regal course where you can shake the rust off.

Seafood Delicacies:

To cap off the day, dig into the decadent seafood that St. Simons Island is famous for. Crabdaddy's Restaurant is a crowd favorite, offering local fresh fish, scallops and, of course, king crab. Iguanas Seafood Restaurant is another chart-topper, and the crab bisque might knock you off your seat.

The Outdoor Paradise of Northeast Georgia Mountains

With gentle peaks, tumbling waterfalls and small towns, northeast Georgia is considered a natural paradise for visitors. Athens is the largest city in the region, but places like Blue Ridge and Helen grant instant access to nature parks.

Wineries:

There are more than 10 distinct northeast Georgia wineries. Frogtown Cellars is a top-notch winery and vineyard, Serenberry Vineyards allows visitors to taste the product of local farmers, while Three Sisters Vineyard & Winery is a small family farm that boasts 180 acres of ripe grapes.

Animal Havens:

The Dillard House Petting Zoo is a free petting zoo with many friendly farm animals for kids to enjoy. Nearby, enjoy fishing at Andy's Trout Farm nestled at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. For more adventure, check out the Chestastee Wildlife Preserve hosts more than 100 animals over 20 acres of rolling farmland, complete with a hiking path and mountain views.

Waterfalls:

These cascades are considered the Gemstones of the East. A few waterfalls are visible from the road, but most can be easily reached on hikes of varying difficulty. Check out one of the five gorgeous waterfalls along the 3-mile section of the DeSoto Falls Trail. In Amicalola Fall State Park, you'll find the tallest waterfall in Georgia, the waters plunging 729 feet in seven cascades.

History, Romance and Architecture in Savannah

Originally a seaport in the 1700s, Savannah served as the first colonial capital of the state - now, you can discover the architectural treasures before indulging in scrumptious seafood.

Bonaventure Cemetery:

Bonaventure Cemetery is a hallmark of the city, offering crypts and a haunting beauty that has inspired poets, photographers and filmmakers for decades. Among the 100 acres, you'll stumble upon important group burial sites such as veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Order of Railroad Conductors.

Architecture in the Squares:

More than 40 percent of the city's buildings have architectural or historical significance. Taking a walking tour in the Historic District is great way to conquer a lot of ground in a short time, where you'll get samples of Victorian Regency, Greek Revival, and Italianate architecture. The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist's Gothic towers continue to mystify onlookers, while Mercer Williams House is another must-see.

Romantic Restaurants:

Looking for a fun-filled night out with your lover? There are no shortage of candlelit dinners that'll be sure to kindle the flames. Housed in a Neoclassical-style villa, Elizabeth on 37th serves up modern Southern food or share a plate at Jazz'D Tapas.
