Don't worry, it's not really the end of the world

It's hard to miss the Monastery of St. John. Built in the 11th century, the fortress sits atop the historic village of Chora, and contains many relics—it's an absolute must. While you're there, you should check out Chora itself. Its charming streets and Cycladic-style buildings are easy on the eye, and there are lots of interesting galleries, museums, and restaurants serving up local fare, as well as a few places to grab a cold drink. Staying with the subject of St. John, why not check out the ominously named Cave of the Apocalypse, where the saint is believed to have experienced divine visions.

While it may be small, Patmos has plenty of beaches where you can soak up some serious vitamin D. Psili Amos and Agrio Livadi are among the island's most scenic and popular.
