Villa Myrtia is a high quality villa with 2 double and 2 twin bedrooms and a large living-dining space, all air conditioned (quiet!), for the hot evenings.
Our London family of 2 adults and 3 teenagers came for our second visit to this villa in August 2014 and we have recommended it to others in our family.
Location 2 km outside Rethymnon (and 200 metres higher), it is excellent if you have a car which can be parked on the secure site. You are quickly on the road to the hills or the main coast road or a 10 minute drive and you are parked by the Rethymnon fort.
All shopping can be done by walking at most 300 metres from the villa - excellent bakery, several supermarkets with in-store butchers, pharmacy.
It is not suitable for ambulant-disabled (doorstep and bathrooms).
The pool is a constant 1.5 metres deep, level deck with direct access from the house, (not good for non-swimming small kids).
The villa has a guide to local attractions that gets updated and the visitor book has plenty of information from guests.
Web-based guides (Trip Advisor and maybe this site...!) etc, were found very misleading and we used the Rough Guide which is written by people who do know what they are talking about. There is plenty to do in Crete! The kids were bored out of their minds by monasteries and churches but still enjoyed their two weeks in Villa Myrtia...!
You don't come to Crete for fusion or haute-cuisine...in the village late-night taverna eating-out is typical basic Cretan and inexpensive, (less than half the usual Rethymno restaurant price). But there are really great/fun places in nearby hill villages - Episcopi, Argiroupolis, Kournas, the Lake etc and even East along the front of Reth.
