Perfect location and staff

  • 5 of 5
We are a family of five (including 3 kids, 7, 11 and 13 years old) who have spent three weeks in Siyambala House during July 2012, where we had a wonderful time. First of all, before getting there, we really appreciated the contacts we had with the owners, especially with Alison who has been very patient providing us with all the details we needed about the location. Once in Siyambala house, you will still be in touch with friendly and helpful people. Indeed, all the staff, and especially Nalaka, the manager, is very thoughtful, always willing to do the best to offer you a memorable stay and make you feel at home. For instance, they set up a wonderful birthday party for our youngest daughter with everything you would expect when you are a little girl celebrating your 7th birthday : a big birthday cake, with your name on it and of course seven candles, a birthday card, a bunch of flowers and things you would not expect such as…a wonderful fireworks, which I believe she will always remember !It was a real pleasure to start the day with a copious breakfast, served on the large terrace with exotic fresh fruits (exotic for french people !) such as papaya, mangoustan, passion fruits…and to savour here the meals of the cook, who according to our girls, did the best french fries they have ever tasted (and, about french fries, I believe we can trust them!), but who would also prepare curries and other Sri Lankan specialties and sea fruits that all of us appreciated. The house is very large, well maintained with comfortable furniture, with a nice and also large garden well kept by the gardener, and pleasantly illuminated in the evening. From the house, and from all the rooms, we could enjoy everyday the fantastic view on the lake, especially sunsets in the evening from the large infinite pool and the terrace, where we could relax with the gentle breeze of the trade winds. The surroundings are very quiet, without anything that could trouble this peaceful location.Whenever you want, the driver will get you to very nice and close beaches, as well as other locations such as Galle. Our favourite beach was Mirissa. We aslo had the opportunity to have a journey around Sri Lanka, many thank’s to Nalaka who organized it perfectly well, and we came back home with wonderful memories of a safari, of the perahera of Kandy, of the elephant orphanage, of a train trip in the mountains, surrounded by tea plantations…

A perfect tamarind hideaway

The journey to Siyambala House does little to prepare you for what awaits. Driving down from Galle, with the lapping Indian Ocean by your side, it is clear you're in a special part of the world. But turn off the main road, over the railway track, down winding lanes and onto gravel tracks, and it’s not a matter of being far from the madding crowd anymore, but after a while you wonder if it still exists at all. Soon after that, you realise that you really don’t care either way…

Entering the house is, literally, an eye-opening experience. To the right, the dining area and veranda, ahead of you, the living room atrium; all around you, the lake. That we arrived just in time for sundowners and a magical sunset (they’re all magical) was just icing. The water at dusk is enchanting, the way it catches the fading light. Someone else mentioned the squadrons of bats (is that a better collective noun than “flock”?) and they truly are a sight to behold; don't be alarmed though, they fly their missions at high altitude…

None of the rooms would really be out of place in a high-end resort, while you’ll find the twin upstairs is great for kids. If there are any tiny quibbles – such as the water pressure being a little low on (rare) occasion, or the presence of lightning-fast geckos in your room, these simply reflect where you are and are hardly the fault of the house or the staff. Because the staff were great too. Always happy to help, unobtrusive yet always easily to hand, friendly and happy to talk (cricket being the cross-cultural ice-breaker), and happy to meet your every need. The manager of the property is a man who has more connections than the London Underground and can get things done far more effectively than Boris Johnson.

As for the food, well we ate like kings. The curries (the fish!), the vegetables (the eggplants, the beans, the onions and greens!), the salads, the chilies, the coconut sambal… Be sure to savour the local specialties; life has not been the same without my morning string hoppers since…

If you're new to Sri Lanka, I recommend you take a copy of Ondaatje’s Running in the Family… it will transport you back to a time and place, and the cinnamon oil factory at the end of Siyambala’s driveway will take on an even more pleasurable significance… Embrace Sri Lanka, embrace its beauty, embrace the people – and I promise it will all embrace you back, with interest.

And what an exquisite house to do it all from…
