Simple. Beautiful. Off the beaten path.

My only lament is that I needed 2 more weeks there.

Everyone was wonderful to us- Papa Curvin, Grace, Johanna, Kurrency, and Cornelia, who emailed with me in the weeks leading up to our trip to help me with all of the logistics.

Beautiful people-- hospitable, warm, helpful, easy to talk to, extremely accommodating. We loved the property and it was the absolute perfect spot for us to stay- a good distance from the built up resorts and tourist developments of the island. We were free to do our own thing, had privacy, but the comfort of knowing the staff were just a few steps away and always there to answer any questions we had. We were utterly content with the simplicity of walking to town or the small provisions shops to pick up anything we needed, eating & drinking at roadside spots nearby, swimming at the nearby James Bond beach, sunbathing on the rocks by the cabin, lounging in hammocks, drinking lots of rum on the porch, and chatting up the Real Jamaica staff.

Hoping I'll be back in the not too distant future.

Perfect Spring Break Getaway

  • 5 of 5
My boyfriend and I decided very last-minute to come out to Jamaica for our spring break. We're both college students, but we decided that we'd rather spend time with actual Jamaicans instead of staying in the super touristy resort havens. We could not have been more pleased with how quickly they responded to our hasty request for housing and the hospitality they showed us when we arrived. Curvin and Zyon went out of their way to make us feel at home and to ensure that we had the best time possible in their town.

Staying in the area was extremely affordable and offered many opportunities to visit areas without any other tourists. The photos on this page don't do justice to the beautiful tree-filled lot that the two cottages reside on. It's wonderful to walk around the naturally canopied pathways or to read in the hammock with spectacular cliffside views of the ocean thirty feet away. The exquisitely maintained cottages themselves are also perfectly equipped for a week away. Each features a kitchenette stocked with all the basic essentials for cooking and feeding yourselves. Each day, we'd walk or take the local bus (there's only one road, so it's hard to get lost) down to the market for food to cook up. As most of the area restaurants stop serving food past sundown, our late-night schedules didn't adjust for us to eat out much for dinner, but we did have one or two delicious lunches.

I would highly recommend stopping at the road side bars and "jellie" stands (selling refrigerated coconuts). Although I couldn't understand the thicker accents, it was really nice to stop, talk to people and also thoroughly enjoy the snack/drink we'd just picked up. Again, as the village doesn't get many tourists, people were amused by our stupid questions about food/directions and were happy to chat.

Although we did make it out to Negril for our final day (and the water temperature was to die for), you're cheating yourselves of a fuller Jamaican experience if you spend all of your trip in the (much more expensive) resort areas. Also, if security is your concern, besides one easily avoidable run-in with a lowlife in an Ochos Rios market, our trip passed without any sort of safety or theft related incidents!

When we went, Clive's Transport Services were the cheapest and best reviewed budget option for getting out to Oracabessa/Ochos Rios. Our trips were seamless, so if new reviews still say great things, they're a good choice.

Come to Real Jamaica - it's amazing!
