Our family stayed at the Coral Garden Inn for over two weeks in August. Our girls keep on asking us to take them back there because they miss the coral gardens (beautiful circular coral formations with fish "flying" between the corals about 50 feet off the beach), the friends (Augusta the caretaker’s girls), the pets both in and out of the water (cats, dogs, fish, crabs, birds, lobsters, shrimps, etc.) and the kids' pool (Augusta's children built a little shallow sea-pool with conch shells and rocks).
The inn is beautiful, very clean, and comfortable. We particularly enjoyed having our meals on the porch. We had the entire beach area to ourselves. The only visitors were the food trucks and a group of Mexican scientists surveying the conch growth in the water in front of the house. There are hundreds of huge conches in the water. The water is crystal clear and calm, and there are beautiful coral growths right off shore. The water is shallow and calm enough for toddlers to swim in.
The inn serves as a great base for venturing out. The town of Xcalak is only a few minutes away, and has several shops with food supplies and other things. We had several nice meals at Toby’s. The children loved the fish tacos and fresh fries. We drove to Mahahual and Chetumal and got fresh pineapples on the road to Chetumal. The vendors come right to the road and you just pull your car over and buy it. Truly fresh pineapple is impossibly good! Don’t miss out the diving and snorkeling trips offered by XTC Dive Center. We made it to Banco Chinchorro, which was amazing. The staff at XTC are unbelievably cool, and even baked a cake for our 10 year old’s birthday, completed with relighting candles ?.
Roberta and Ron are gracious hosts. Roberta is patient, responsive and very knowledgeable.
