Peaceful Retreat to the Tannery for 4th of July

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I just returned from a lovely weekend with our family to celebrate my mother-in-law's retirement at the Tannery. We can't say enough nice things. Mimi and Jack have lovingly restored this neat old house and furnished it so charmingly.

Here are just a few of the things we enjoyed: sleeping on the porch (a full 15 degrees cooler at night than what we're used to in DC!), watching steam roll off the hot springs in the morning, dinner at the Waterwheel, seeing the sun set between mountains halfway to Hot Springs, a spectacular fireworks display on the golf course at the Homestead, watching our puppy romp and fetch crab apples in the backyard, getting spoils at the Hot Spring's farmer's market, and jogs through Warm Springs in the mornings.

Very highly recommend the Tannery for its charm, tranquility, and well-appointedness!

Charming historic home

  • 5 of 5
We absolutely love this place. This was our second stay and we are plotting and planning a third trip next year. What you will enjoy:
1. Sleeping on the sleeping porch. The burble of the warm springs creek will sing you to sleep.
2. Garth Newel. Go on a weekend and attend a performance followed by dinner. You will meet people and have a great time.
3. Lying around in the "natural hot tub" (well, warm tub) in the stream out back.
4. Sitting on the porch downstairs and reading books.
5. Walking to the Grist Mill restaurant for delicious meals.
6. Thinking about all the people who lived and worked in this house over the many years.
7. Plotting how you could chuck it all and move to Bath County full time.

Things to bring:
1. water shoes--you'll be more comfortable in the stream. I keep forgetting them!
2. all cooking supplies (food/spices/salt & pepper/napkins/paper towels) you will need. Pots, pans, dishes, silverware & glasses are all there, however.
3. Verizon. You will get service. Can't speak for other carriers.

Hikes to enjoy:
Mount Pleasant. We are mid-forties in decent shape. Took us 4 hours (round trip) and the views were INCREDIBLE from one of the highest peaks in the Blue Ridge. (It's 1 1/2 hours drive from Warm Springs but who cares? The drive is also so pretty!) Go google it. Gorgeous!!!
