Drove up, parked in one of only 5 personal cottage slots and left the luggage in the car. I knew I had found Old Florida once I hit the pathway leading to the Yachtsman cabana. I passed a cozy covered thatch roof gazebo with four chairs and a table - perfect for playing cards outdoors, Florida vegetation marking entrances to each of the other two cottages, and then found our cabana, the Yachtsman - and it looked just like the pictures. Idyllically perched on the beach with a deck sitting near the Gulf Coast dunes was our new "home away from home". I told my family of 9 cousins, Aunts and Uncles and extended family, welcome to OUR beach house.
Those of you who need granite and a House Beautiful vacation and your room cleaned every day, please stay away so the rest of us can have our bohemian/Bahamian vacation spot to ourselves. For us, and for me, born in the Ft. Lauderdale in the 50's, everything about this place was PERFECT with over the top Old Florida comfortable accommodations. We never even touched the two bedrooms the entire week - except for the closets. We slept in what I'll call the lanai, with windows open, the ocean breeze wafting through the screens and the gentle sounds of surf filling the cabana day and night long. I slept in the daybed and my husband slept on what he said was the most comfortable couch EVER. Our wood paneled kitchen had every gadget we needed and the powder room was done in all white with Tommy Bahama soaps and bath washes.
We had laundry room privileges on Monday and Wednesday where we met some of the other guests. How cool. But the most important part of the vacation were the large gatherings of the family and the meals at the two picnic tables just outside our door. Our photos of the three generations with the sunset in the background, the sea oats swaying on the dunes, the young ones playing on the beach just in front of the cabana with the zillion beach toys provided by our hosts - well, I now regret writing this review. Why, because I want this place to be available to us whenever we want - and just found out when trying to do a spring vacation, 'our' beach home is booked through June. So, we made our reservations for next Christmas the day we left - Same Place, Same Time next year. Here's to the most contented vacation we've experienced in decades. Thank you, Deanna and Chuck!!!
