I'll make this simple. We are nearing the end of our 7 week stay and have booked again for the same time period next year. If you want a quiet (except when the gardeners are here), convenient, and wonderful weather area, you need not look any further. We spend most of our time out on the 240 square foot lanai which also contains a clean and efficient barbeque. I don't think we had ONE meal at the indoor dining table or at the bar near the kitchen.
This is a perfect place for one or two couples or a large family. There is a loft upstairs with 2 single beds and a small but full bath. The loft area is NOT closed off to the downstairs so it's pretty much intended for kid's use.
This part of the island is what I call the "real" Hawaii. It is not far from coffee farms, beautiful Kealekekua Bay which houses the Captain Cook monument, and also nearby is the historic City of Refuge. The best 2 snorkeling areas in Hawaii are within a 20 minute drive: "2 step" and the area by the aforementioned monument.
So if you are not the "resort type" that likes to pay for expensive hotels, you should check out Keauhou Punehele. If you are the "resort type", head to Waikoloa, or as the locals call it-WINDkoloa.
